Lefty advice....?

Hey TFL,

For other lefties out there, do you see a benefit in getting a gun, like the p10c or p320, that has an ambi slide lever? I know that using gross motor skills is typically the most effective way to manipulate a firearm, but I've always wondered what it would be like having one that would conform to me being left handed.

I'm currently looking at options for a first handgun/ccw, and would like to hear opinions on this. Should I really be concerned with buying a more left-hand friendly gun, or would something like a glock 19 or sig sp2022 be fine with the right handed controls?

Thanks in advance.

Using the slide release to close the action after a reload is definitely faster than taking the time to use the sling shot method, especially with a two hand grip.
Unless there's a problem chambering the next round.
Then the extra oomph of yanking the slide to the rear can come in handy.
Bottom line - know how to do both methods.
So, yes an ambi slide release can be desirable for lefty.

It sounds terrible and unhelpful but I'm left handed and I just shoot fully right handed guns. I just use gross motor skills rather than trying to adjust every firearm i own. Probably not the best way to go but thats just the way that i go.

Right handed shooters who practice left handed are in the same boat.
Even if they rely on using the slide release when shooting normally, they still have to be comfortable with the sling shot method for shooting with the other hand.
We all should practice both left and right handed shooting.
Never know when it will come in handy.

As a lefty I see nothing wrong with going for purely right handed controls. Although I'm a bit of an unusual case, I'm left handed but my right hand and side is strong side for me. Shooting left handed feels pretty strange for me, but I just reload with a tug on the slide shooting like that. Generally use the slide stop when shooting right handed though.

For "administrative" stuff, like decockers and slide releases, I don't care if the gun is ambi, or not.
For manual safeties that are always in use, and mag releases, the gun has to be set up for left-hand operation (mag release on the left side is set up for left-handed operation . . .).
I try to adapt, when possible, to right-handed guns as I may have to shoot a gun that isn't set up the way I would my own gun - such as operating the selector on an AR with my trigger finger - but a manual "thumb safety" that is on the wrong side of a typical handgun is a no-go.

So what would be some recommendations you all have? I am very interested in the new p320 with a manual safety, and the p10c as far as striker-fired designs go. I've also been looking heavily at the sig sp2022. Any thoughts on these guns or others?

The new p320 seems like a good bet (if I like how it shoots) because I know a lot of accessories and such will be available given the new Army contract.

Rick took the words out of my mouth. Ambi or reversible mag releases and manual safeties are a must for me as a lefty. Slide release lever doesn't matter to me because I never use it.

I'm a south paw owning a dozen or so pistols. I just shoot 'em. Only the Browning Medalist presents a minor problem -- so I shoot it right handed. No issues.

Greetings!

I'm a lefty too. I have held, but not fired, the P320 and really liked the way it felt in my hand. So much so that it is high on my to buy list. The only handguns I've fired have ever been right handed, and that kind of lends itself to adaption.

I guess I've just gotten used to the safety being on the other side. However I do have a left handed Remington 870. There is something to be said for not having to flip the gun over to function the safety and not having the spent shells fly across my field of view.

I'm in the process of building an AR. It will be fully ambidextrous when I'm finished.

I guess it makes a difference, but adapting and being familiar with your firearm is more important.

I'm with Rough Divider,

I shoot with my left hand and my right is stronger for the slide. I practice
uses both lefty and right handed. Bat either side when I was younger depending on to get a hit of go long ball and play golf right handed.

I got my Glock 19 and switched the mag release. Other than that, this is a right handed world.

Good luck.

I am not fully left-hand dominant as I play all sports right-handed. I can shoot right-handed fairly well too. I haven't had any problem shooting any pistol I have been handed, and I feel comfortable using a right-handed gun to defend myself. What I am mainly asking is if having a pistol with something like an ambidextrous slide release would be more beneficial, or if it is a non-issue that I shouldn't concern myself with.

Slide release? Not really as I can use my trigger finger for that. IF the gun has an external safety like a 1911, then an ambi safety is a must.
