I also have a question for the 870 vs mossberg debate. I am a left handed shooter. I have shot both the 870 and an Ithaca model 37. I liked both, and the 870 better.

My problem was this. My trigger finger kept kicking the safety in when the gun recoiled. Therefore I couldn't make my next shot. I didn't know the safety was on.

Here is my question. Can the safety on either of these guns, and others, be changed to opperate in the other direction?

Also, if the answer is no, would the mossberg by my solution with it's top mounted safety? I assume yes.

Also, do any companies (rem, moss, ??) make any left hand eject models? Or will they build one?

Remington makes the 870 Express in a left hand version. They don't make many and they are a bit more expensive. There have been some left hand safeties made for right hand 870s, but think of the possible liability problems. What would happen if a right handed shooter picked up a right hand shotgun with a left hand safety? The trigger group can be replaced with a left hand version, but the problem is still there.

Your best bet is to locate a true left hand 870, use a Mossberg or a bottom ejection shotgun although that may not cure the safety problem.
 
DML is on the money,CW, but I think there's a simpler solution...

Use masking tape to build up the bottom of the grip a bit. Enough that your hand holds the weapon more vertically.With the trigger finger moving straight back,this prob may be solved.If so, Kickeez makes a neoprene pad for this purpose.If not, just remove the tape.

A tighter radius on the grip is one of the things the fabled Etchen target grip does.

I too am a left handed shooter, and I picked the mossberg because of its safety location.


for a left handed shooter, the mossberg is tops, and they're somewhat less expensive, to boot.
 
Rem trigger groups, shotguns and pump/auto loading rifles, are easily converted to left handed operation. Two new holes must be drilled in the housing, one mirror image hole for ball/spring and new re located retaining cross pin hole. Much easier to see than explain.

I have converted 870s, 11-87s and a few 7600/7400 rifles. Works just fine and is reversable. All you need is a good drill press/vise or a milling machine. DML has a valid concern regarding potential liability issues, for this reason you'll probably have a hard time finding a smith to do this simple modification.
 
Other than the newer 870,,any gunsmith worth his salt can remove the trigger assemblym and switch around the saftey I have had it done on all of my,as far as I can see unless it is a department issue there is no problem Remington designed it that way.
 
Procedure for switching safety from RH to LH is same for old style safety and new style locking :barf: safety. Last time I modified a rem safety (7600 rifle) I replaced the plunger and locking safety with "old" style components from Brownell's. Now the only reminder of the locking safety is the two little painted dots on the trigger gard.

You still must be careful about warning right handers though, it is backwards to them.
 
I shoot a left handed also, and I shoot a right hand designed 870.

Nobody has touched on the obvious here....I think you simply are putting too muchof your finger in the trigger. Use only the pad of the tip of your finger and unless you have very short fingers you should not contact the safety at all.
