Leather care + Black Powder Pistols

Hey guys, more noob questions coming at you. Hope you all don't mind me posting so much. :p

So, when I picked up my 1858 Remmie, I grabbed some of the cheap cabelas leather to go with it. For the price, I don't think I could beat it. Like $55 for a belt, holster, and cylinder pouch made of what appears to made of half decent, thick leather.

Anyway, what do you guys like to use to take care of your leather for use with BP revolvers? Also, if you want, maybe show off some pics of your rigs and why you like them. I like seeing what people use.

JarYetz, i dont shoot a cap and ball pistol all my stuff is flintlock, but I do make custom leather hunting pouches, sheaths, period military rigs for reinactors etc. Ive been leather crafting for 40 years, the best stuff that Ive found for leather care id Whites Boot Preservative in the jar, made from natural waxes and has anti molding agents in it, pluss it will help to water proof your leather, they have a website

It's not, it's chrome tanned. Don't use any oil or saddle soap on it. Use upholstery cleaner. It may be a little stiff now but it will get so soft the lips will fold in and it'll take both hands to draw and holster. When it comes to leather you get what you pay for. You need a holster made from 9-10 oz. vegetable tanned leather and that ain't cheap. This is Cabela's(Oklahoma Leather)leather. Ok for occasional use but that's about it.

This is also Oklahoma Leather. I sold this rig for 80 bucks(less guns). It had gotten so soft and limp you had to use both hands and wiggle the guns in and out of it.

This is good quality leather by Brazos Jack of Etowah River Leather.

Thanks for the info and pics, Hawg. What I'm hoping is that this thread will help prep me for when I can afford the $500 or so it will cost me for the custom rig I will want to get. :)

JarYetz, have you seen the work done by Bigbadgun? He's a regular poster over on The High Road, and from what I've seen, does exceptional work.

Shotgun Willy: No, I haven't seen his work, but I will certainly head over there and look for it! I've been lurking at those forums for a bit now, just haven't stumbled across him yet I suppose.
