Lead Paranoia?

Is anyone as paranoid about lead as I am? I mean, after I handle some ammo I always rush to the bathroom to wash my hands. Does anyone know how common lead poisoning is? Maybe its the 'reproductive harm' that gets me. :)

A wise precaution, I would say. I believe lead stearate from primers is also a problem.

I have a bad habit when rimfire target shooting of easing back the bolt, then lifting the empty out with my right forefinger --- it saves scattering the brass with the ejector, which has to be picked up later. Then I'd often have a sandwich or something back in the clubhouse -- until I noticed the black ring on the pad of my forefinger. Now, that may be harmless, sooty residue, but I don't take the chance.

The drill is -- leave the firing line, rifle in the rack --- wash hands with soap -- eat sandwich.

Lead is primarily an internal hazard. The ammount that absorbs through your skin is insignificant. The real hazards are inhalation and ingestion. Its my understanding that the lead from the primer results in greater exposure that the lead from the bullet.

Your bigest exposure probably comes from shooting in poorly ventilated areas, second biggest from eating or smoking with lead residue on your hands. If you have childern at home it would be a wise precaution to clean your shoes as the lead is much more toxic to children than to adults.

(In my best paranoid voice)

Leads everywhere man! I saw some on my way to work! Last night at the restaurant! Oh man, I'm not sure, but there some behind me right now!

Seriously though- I always wash up after shooting as soon as possible. I also try not to eat right after shooting. Its better to be safe than sorry...
