I am just starting to reload. I participate in pin shooting and have always used either jacketed ball or hollowpoints. A few of the bullet makers make a 225g flat point lead bullet. Will lead bullets be as effective on pins as jacketed bullets? Any performance downside to using the lead? Thanks.

Regards,
Frank

I've had good luck with 200gr lswc.A lot of other people I know shoot the same and had no problem.A 225 or 230 would be better but I can't find any in lswc

Frank, without going so far into the reloading topic that this gets moved, let me tell you everything I know about lead bullets. In less than two seconds ;) .

Lead bullets achieve higher velocities than do jacketed when using the same powder charges. Seems the copper jackets have more drag to them. As for the 225 gr flatpoints, a lot of really good pin shooters I know use them. I just picked up a box of them, and I'll see how my Kimber Gold Match feeds them. It's sometimes finicky on reloads.

Good luck,

Dick

In a nutshell, yes. Lead bullets are fine for pinshooting.

They may, some people theorize, be even better for pin shooting than jacketed bullets. The thought goes that a lead bullet, even with a grazing shot, will mash into the pin and grab hold of it, preventing it from just skipping off to the side of the pin.

Theory? Truth? Hell if I know.
