LCR or LC9?

DARN IT!! I'd just made my mind up to get an LCR, had almost all the $$ socked away to order it (XS sights with the original grips), then I started reading about the LC9's...

If you were going to use them for carry, would you choose the LCR, or the LC9?

I think I'd pick the LC9. Holds more rounds and probably reloads faster for most people. I'm not sure but I believe the LC9 is thinner too.

I've got 2 LCR 38 and had been looking at the LC9, haven't seen one in person yet.

LCR
Point and shoot, if the gun does not break, it will go bang. I've got all the reloading stuff too.

Only 5 rounds, enough for a single attacker but limited for multiples.

LC9
More rounds, quick reload

If the gun does not break, jams are part of normal operation for a semi, can't fire from inside a pocket, if you don't have a firm grip it may jam. has a safety that probably isn't needed since it is double action only.

It really comes down to 99.99 % reliability of those 5 shots or somewhat less reliability and more shots.. . . .

Get both. I bought an LCR357 for pocket carry now, and in about a year I will buy the LC9. The LCR will be my truck gun and the LC9 will be my new pocket CCW. I would hold off on the LC9, I'm hoping for a blackened stainless version and I want to see how it works out for a year or so. Perhaps if there is enough interest they will remove a lot of the extra junk on the LC9 and market to those of us who live in free states. Maybe even an LUC9.

f the gun does not break, jams are part of normal operation for a semi,

BS. I had a Keltec P11 1500 rounds no malfuncions

FEG PJK-9HP, M&P 9c, M&P 9FS, Bersa 380, Makarov, CZ 52, ZERO malfunctions and the 9C has over 6000 rounds through it.

Ruger LCP 500 rounds had two malfunctions with one brand of ammo on the same day.

Doesn't seem like jams are a "normal operation" to me.

In fact, I've had a revolver and a bolt action rifle jam on me and both of them took quite a bit of effort to get them running again. A malfunction in a semi if normally very easy to overcome so you can get back in the fight.

Today anyway -

Im tending to agree with Specs, and Im leaning toward the wheel gun as the first purchase, and then maybe next year get the 9. A lot of the reason is just because Im not a big fan of going out and getting the first generation of anything...

Like to let folks who love to be the 'first kid on the block' do the testing for me...

I like the size of the LC9 and will be looking at one once they get to my gunshop. 2 things that should be noted, the LCP had some minor recall issues, part of me wants to wait for the LC9 to be out awhile just to see how its running. Lastly the LC9 has a somewhat hefty retail price of $440 or so, not a deal breaker by any means.

I love those spec comparisions, los. Good work!

As much a I love wheel guns, I think I'd choose the LC9 if I had to choose only one. But my choice is based just on personal preference and not on any deep personal defense issue or argument.

At the same time, I am also less likely to buy a first year product than some. I'm more of a behind-the-curve kinda guy. :D

los,

Thank you for that picture, that is very useful for comparison

I had never even heard of the LC9 until this thread. Based on the size comparison and personal preference, I'd pick the LC9 over the LCR.

I was getting very excited about the LC9 as a possible carry gun, until I saw that it has a manual safety. I see no reason to saddle a double-action-only auto with a manual safety....just another thing that can go wrong when your life is on the line and you need your gun to shoot. Not discounting the gun entirely, though, but it will have to compete with the Kel-Tec P11, Ruger LCP, and the Kahrs.

I'd take 5 for sure over 8 maybe. Especially in a CC gun where a "get off me" situation is highly likely. At the ready, such as in a coat pocket, but still hidden isn't a bad option to have either.

Just wanted to update to my first post. I can't justify buying the LC9 since I get the homeland discount on all Glocks, I can get a new Glock 26 (9mm) for $398 plus tax or roughly $428 out the door for a 9mm thats shorter in height, slightly wider and slightly longer and almost the same weight...and the Glock stock mag is 10 rounds vs the LC9 of 7. Before I researched a bit, I thought the Ruger would have been better. Granted if I DID NOT get the Glock discount then the LC9 would have beaten the Glock out due to price.
LC9 6 inches long, Glock 26 6.3 inches long
LC9 .9 inches wide Glock 1.2 inches wide
LC9 4.5 inches tall Glock 4.17 inches tall
LC9 17 oz Glock 19.75 oz

Very close in deed, again if I didn't get the Glock discount, then the LC9 would be a clear winner...but I cannot justify spending more money on an unproven 9mm that holds less rounds...when it comes down to concealed carry theres not a clear winner here.

Billy, if you're still not able to view the comparison chart let me know and I'll be glad to send it to your email.

I'm a revolver guy. I like 9mm out of a full size pistol, but I feel more confident in my ability to shoot a snub nose over a small somewhat flippy semi auto.

Just personal preference.

I happen to EDC a .38 LCR. I can't stand to leave home without it;)

-just my two cents-
ive got a keltec pf9 which should be about the same as the new ruger,
and i also just bought a lcr in 38 spl+p .
i think the revolver, like any,is a more reliable platform -though limited in rounds.
revolver is not likely to jam-just pull triger when loaded...
i do like both-both have advantages.
i think i will cary the lcr more than my lcp.not sure why?
i do like my pf9 more than my lcp-the lcp is a little to small for my hands.
