LC brass questions?

I found 2 good deals on brass and need input.

Gandermountain and cabelas carry top brass 250rd once fired military. the bag says 223/5.56 which threw me off. it appears mostly LC with WCC and FC mixed in. years seem consistent.

Midwayuse.com has 250rds Lake city 223 but it says at the bottom its LC but stamped FC or AE.

I also found 250 FC-AE brass for under $50

I'm looking for advice which to buy.

I figure this is better than $24-35 for 100 I get in win and rem brass.

Some dont like Federal brass. Said to be soft or have thin webs. I use it, but i dont run maximum loads with it. I did have one of these. My photo.

I almost for the LC from midway until I seen it said made in LC plant but FC/AE headstamps.

on a super tight budget so trying to get the best deal but want to be safe.

dumb question

is 55.6 brass the same as 223 brass? I'm super leary about ordering from non big name retailers as I have been burned and had credit card issues before.

Also take a look at M&H Enterprises, www.oncefiredbrass.com, located at Deposit, NY. They usually have a good variety of once fired brass, all same headstamp, but varies from day to day. Today R-P .223s are priced at $7.50 per 100 and Win .223s $9.00 per 100, tumbled and polished. I have purchased numerous Fed .30-06 cases from them, always excellent quality and great delivery time. Do not be deceived by the price that may appear to be unreasonably low. The LC brass you mention is of course military and could require swaging if not done by the supplier. The Rem and Win commercial brass does not need to be swaged.

The best price/quality once fired LC brass is from BrassBombers. You can buy it as is, tumbled, or tumbled and swaged. Current price for tumbled is $87 and that includes shipping. link

The Midway brass is new, $200/K, which isn't bad, I guess.

I don't see that one firing being worth the premium over processed once fired.

I bought from these guys back when they were Scharch: http://www.topbrass-inc.com/reloading-supplies/product_details.php?item_id=2

Already sized and the primer crimp removed.

Just clicked on the link "rg1" posted, that is a much better price for fully processed brass, $100/K, half the price of new.

That is a no-brainer.

www.gibrass.com

"5.56mm NATO Just in: Recent shipment, once-fired, 95+% LC, a few SAWS
(223) brass, mixed dates, mostly LC10 and LC11. Nice brass,
Add $25/M to polish and process primer pocket.
Ttl Qty: 100 500 1M 5M
$ Cost: $10 $40 $75/M $350/5M "

That is $100 per 1000, with the crimp removed, for real deal LC.

5.56 (LC) and 223 have the same dimension and specs per SAAMI.
What is different is the chamber of the rifles: 5.56 chambers have slightly longer leade, or throat.

Not a dumb question at all. The 223 vs 5.56 carries a lot of myths and misconceptions and it can be difficult to navigate.

Yes, 223 and 5.56 brass are the same, except.

Except, once fired 5.56 brass will have a crimped primer whereas the 223 most often does not. This crimp needs to be removed before a new primer can be seated. It only needs to be done once.

Those selling "once fired" brass often time remove the crimp for you and they usually call this "processed brass". If the brass has not been "processed" and the crimp remove you will have to do that yourself. No big deal, just some extra time involved.

No need to worry about Thicker, Thinner, More Volume, Less Volume between the 223 and the 5.56. These two head stamps do not vary in volume like the Military 308-7.62 and 30-06 military cases do.

Internal volume can vary, but it is more of a brand or manufacturer, then it is 223 vs 5.56.

See here for a list of internal volumes and you will see what I mean.

Metal is expensive to ship. 223 brass is everywhere and it's cheap, especially the stuff with crimped primers. Even reloaders often leave it behind, and you know its once fired if its crimped.

If you post a few forum ads, call some ranges or local gun stores, and find some local for you, it's cheap.

I have a bunch of LC I picked up until I got tired. When I get home I can check and see how much of it I have if you are interested. It will be very cheap. I loaded a few hundred for my brother but I think I have a bunch more. I don't even shoot it.

I think it was caused by my die over working the neck, plus being in storage for years??

I don’t. I believe the case was fired and was ejected without the neck. A disciplined reloader gave me 60 7mm Remington Mag cases; about the time I got them cleaned up I called him to find out where the cases came from. He received the cases from a friend that has passed away. I then wanted to know if anyone knew where the rifle was, the best answer was somewhere in the family.

The cases were on the verge of loosing their necks because of reloading bad habits and poor gun maintenance.

FC or AE are the same company. Federal. Apparently, so is Lake City. Midway shows new LC 5.56 as being Federal. Out of stock anyway though, but it was $54.99 for 250. $49.99 per 250 for LC .223. Same stuff.
"...once fired 5.56 brass will have a crimped primer..." Might have crimped primers. Lots of heated discussions about that too. Last one I saw indicated LC brass was not. No mention of crimps on the Midway listing either

Everglades Ammo

I have had exceptional dealings with Everglades Ammo. Great prices, free shipping, and if u take the time to look at the reviews they seem to (as if by magic) deliver just about anywhere in the country within 3 days, or so it seems. Seriously, their delivery time is scary fast. And they always include extra cases to make up for any damaged/unserviceable cases that may have slipped through. It's been a long while ago, but I think my purchase of 1K cleaned but unprocessed 5.56 cases netted me 1,040 cases.
