Amigo, you really need to talk to a lawyer in your area to get all your questions answered. As a criminal defense lawyer, I can tell you that most criminal defense lawyers that I know would be happy to take a few minutes to help a student who called up with some questions for a school paper. Get out your yellow pages, and look under "Attorneys," and look for criminal defense people. Have your questions lined up, and tell the receptionist that it should only take ten minutes of his time.
