In the Netherlands dutch police have the habit of having there ammunition specially made. In recent decennia we have seen 3 types in 9mm ammunition:
The Action 3, the Action effect and currently a new cartridge has been developed: the Action NP.

I was wondering what kind of ammunition Law Enforcement Agencies in the US are using. Is this also specially made or just ordered from the shelf at a manufacturer?

Most LE agencies in the U.S. decide what type of cartridge they want their troops carrying based on local conditions, politics and most important, money. The local city and county agencies here order in multi hundred thousand round lots from the big manufactures of ammo based on a competitive bid system. Remington, Winchester and Federal are the big three around here with Federal being the most often ordered. By far most of the agencies order a standard jacketed hollow point and don’t go into micro management of the design of the ammo. But then agencies like mine shoot thousands of rounds a month so designing - ordering special ammo is outside the agency budget. The SWAT teams are well known for ordering match ammo but again it is a standard round made by a big manufacture. My agency went with a bid but only after competative testing of the rounds offered for sale and bought based on cost and the test results..hope that helps.

It sure does.

In short: just your standard ammo that is around and no fuzzing around with special features like traceable particals and other forensic or ballistic mumbojumbo, right?

SAAMI US law enforcement ammunition....

In short most US police agencies use either Winchester Ranger T, Remington Golden Saber, CorBon/DPX, Hornady TAP, and the Speer Gold Dot.

In 9x19mm AKA 9mmNATO, I'd say the most common LE(law enforcement) round is the Winchester Ranger T 127gr +P+ JHP. The Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P is popular too(it's in use by the NYPD).
For detailed information about ballistics & design, I'd check the website of SAAMI. They are a trade group of small arms ammunition makers/firms.

The US FBI Firearms Training Unit: www.FBI.gov or maybe the DoJ's National Institute of Justice(the research & development office of the Dept of Justice) can offer more information.

the ammo looks like 9 mm Geco BAT except for the red cap. the BAT ammo had a brown insert. I used to buy the BAT ammo from Old Western Scrounger a long time ago (25 years or so ago). I kept it in my Browning High Power. I think the atf had something to do with not being able to buy it anymore. it was good ammo
