latest conspiracy to ban handguns

In progress, ...All handguns must have an "external safety device" So a S&W or Beretta with rabbit ears safety is o.k. So is Glock because the safety is "External" on the trigger. But all SIGs are evil because they "don't have any external safety". Taurus revolvers with the locks are o.k. But Ruger, S&W and Colts are not. :D :o :(

The only good external safety that I can think of is the owner of the gun......he must keep it out of reach of the communists hands that are constantly trying to steal it.

You are absolutely correct. Gun safety is 90% between the ears, most everything else is gadgetry.

I wouldn't discount the benefits of a manual safety too quickly. The following is taken from another post of a 22+ year police officier relating an event that happened during his rookie days (I'm only including the part about the manual safety and editting out the rest due to space considerations) ...
quote:
... i was helping out a crime "victim" who wasn't exactly so innocent himself and when he thought that i was on to him, he grabbed my pistol and tried to shoot me. i guess that i should have been more careful but i was still rather inexperienced and i was trying to comfort the "victim". he pulled the trigger and nothing happened because the safety was engaged. the couple of seconds it took him to figure out why the gun didn't fire and them disengage the safety gave me the opening i needed to bring the situation under control again. last i know, he's still serving time on drug charges & attempted murder of a police officier and i don't have any bullet holes in me because of him. if i had been carrying a revolver without a safety, i would have been shot and maybe killed ...[/quote]While it might be true that the guy should have been more careful not to lose control of his weapon and we should not rely on a gadgets, having that gadget (safety) there DOES provide for an extra layer of "safety". Flicking that lever on & off only takes a split second -- no more time than on a 1911 and the 1911 thumb saftey design has been with us for close to a century.

We'll thats OK with me FUD. All police officers and military must have external safeties, trigger locks, smart guns, weapons without evil features, and 10 rd magazines. It is safest you know, for the children.

Of course the flip side to the personal testimony is:

"If only I hadn't had the external safety I might have made it through my rookie year. They attempted to drill it into me at the academy- flip that safety as I draw, but that night I just forgot. It was dark and I wasn't expecting trouble. I turned the corner and there they were, raping that poor girl. I was scared. I drew my weapon but the BG was pointing his revolver my way. I pulled the trigger before the first shot rang out but nothing happened. Then I heard the gunshots and felt stinging to my face and chest. That is all I remember."

If you have a preference for a particular weapon great, but it's all about freedom of choice.

Decocker is not a safety. A safety must be external and when applied can prevent the firearm from discharging. The only way to fire the weapon must be with the safety "off". It is very interesting that the Glock's trigger safety qualifies under this definition.

Here in Cali the commies passed a "junk gun" ban. Sigs and Glocks are still undecided last I heard. I'm sure our Attorney General (who is anti-gun)will rule Sigs and Glocks are junk. I love it, my $650 Sigs are junk.

Personally I will not carry a gun with a manual safety, just one more thing to go wrong. I carry my Sig in a Level 2 holster to help against gun grabs on duty.

olazul, I've been carrying a gun with a manual safety for close to 18 years now. Just as keeping your finger off the trigger until your traget is in your sights, flicking the manual safety with your thumb on & off also becomes second nature. People who carry 1911's do this all of the time. Now, the 10-round limit is another story ... according to published reports, trained LEOs miss about 50% of the time in actual shootings -- some "experts" place the number as high as 80%. With such a high miss rate by trained professionals, it's only reasonable to assume that less trained citizens will have an even higher miss rate -- making the 10-round limit a real problem for self defense purposes.
