CAUTION: This may be a hoax. (NOT a hoax - see confirmation in my next post). Did anybody else see this? I don't doubt it though - typical inflammatory left wing crap a la Alec Baldwin's "Stone Henry Hyde" outburt some month's back.

"Late, Late Show" Calls For Killing Bush
by HHFi

"In case you didn't see "The Late Late Show" on Friday, August 4, you might be interested in this letter I just sent to CBS's website. Hope you'll join me in complaining loudly...

TO: CBS Television Network

On Friday night's "Late, Late Show," Craig Kilborn showed a photo of George W. Bush captioned "Snipers Wanted." Was this supposed to be a "joke?"

You are encouraging unstable viewers to pick up a gun and MURDER a presidential candidate and our sitting Texas governor! I assume Mr. Kilborn's liberal writers judge Gov. Bush not to be sufficiently tolerant of other viewpoints for their standards, so they actively encouraged someone to assassinate him. How tolerant of them. Well, guess what: it's not only beyond unfunny and beyond bad taste, it is borderline felonious, and I also intend to complain to the Justice Department about it.

By the way, I'm not some uptight conservative with no sense of humor. I write an internationally-syndicated radio comedy service and have written topical jokes every day for 10 years. But if I wrote garbage like that, I wouldn't have many subscribers.

If viewers can be considered your
"subscribers," then I am canceling my
"subscription" to "Late, Late Show." I'm going back to Conan O'Brien, who knows the difference between being funny and inciting murder."

-- 30 --

The hypocrisy of these people is astounding.

If anyone saw this segment, CBS' address is: http://cbsnews.cbs.com/now/feedback/0,1611,412,00.html.

Heck, maybe even the Secret Service should be notified - they've arrested people for a lot less.

Update:

Well, it looks like it is for real. More confirmations have come in. Check out the original thread, with had a half-dozen or so people calling for confirmation.

Here's one of 'em:
"I confirm this. I saw the portion of the Late, Late Show where Kilbourne (sp?) does a segment called "In the News." There was a photo/video capture of Gov. George W. Bush on the podium at the Republican Convention. In the lower left hand of the screen were the words "Snipers Wanted". The image then changed to one of the entire convention hall filmed from high up and the left rear of the crowd. The words "Snipers Wanted" still appeared on the lower left of the screen. I don't know what Kilbourne said as a voice over of these images.

Yes this was broadcast last night (Fri./Sat. Aug. 4/5 on KLEW Channel 3, Lewiston, Idaho at approximately 12:50 AM Aug. 5, 2000).
While presented as part of a "humor segment" about current topical events, it could be interpreted as a solicitation to commit murder, showing both the intented target and a location where that person was visible and exposed.

As memory serves, Kilbourne's show is produced by/in conjunction with David Letterman's World Wide Pants company. IMHO the Bush campaign should immediately decline the invitation to debate Al Gore on the Letterman show due to this possible threat to the life of the candidate.

The problem is that hardly anyone watches these lame shows, so it's hard to get confirmation. At this point, it's good enough for me, so letters are going out.

Wow. It is at times like this that I wonder if leftists are so enamored of citizen / gun control precisely because of their own penchant for violence.

The show and the network damn well better issue an apology post haste.

Aw mann,

I was watching Dave last night and turned it off when he was over. Day late and dollar short yet again :) .

Chill, guys. Satire is historically recognized as protected speach, no matter how disagreeable. You can make a lot of noise about it, but I guarantee you it won't make a damn bit of difference.

True, but promimo, how do you think assassination 'satire' would be received if it was directed at the media's darling, President Clinton?

I think you and I both know.

Regards from AZ

I guess if you call it humor it’s ok. There’s a guy doing time around here for talking (conspiring) to kill a judge. I suppose he didn’t make it funny enough.

This is pathetic, Killborn should have known he can't go that far. Without clarifying that is a joke, if G.W. were president and he were to say something like that he would be getting an official inquiry from the Secret Service, complete with an order not to leave the country until a full investigation is run.

These liberals are getting desperate, take for example the concerns of Ars Technica's own Poptones in this thread:
http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=tpc&s=50009562&f=28609695&m=881092371

Read it folks, look at what he's saying is gonna happen..... simply amazing.

So, are we all going to "cancel our subscriptions" to TFL? I do believe there's been a bit of joking about various assassinations and torture here too. It was funny enough when we were the ones doing it.

Don, the people who have made such jokes, were probably never the moderators of the owners of this board, they were likely people completely legally seperate from this operation. On top of that they were likely asked to stop or the thread was locked. If a moderator did make such statements, a retraction was probably made later under pressure from the others.

With that in mind...

Actually, this isn't considered humor by the
Secret Service. In their book, it constitutes a threat on the life of a presidential candidate, which is treated as solicitation to commit assassination. What was done is a potential criminal act, not humor.

For those who think this is funny, ask yourself one question: would you feel the same way if they put your wife's picture up there, or your mother's, or your father's?

I went to CBS's web site and wrote a complaint letter too. This type of "humor" is uncalled for. Think of how many unstable people sit around and wait for an excuse to commit murder.

I believe this was a spin on the "drivers wanted" ads by volkswagon. I was actually watching that show, and I vaguely remember the line in question. Pretty brief though. I think the words were there for only a second or two, but the Secret Service doesn't have a sense of humor. So Joe Blow jokewriter at CBS will get canned... wahoo.

Of course, I was watching because jazz singer Diana Krall was on, and she is amazing. That and I usually think Craig is pretty funny, especially when he was on Sportscenter (JUMANJI!)

I think that one of the priveledges of being on in the wee hours of the morning (2:30 here in Columbus, OH) is that you probably don't have such a rigorous pre-screening of your material, so you can play around more. I mean, could Conan O' Brian have gotten away with his "Who wants to marry a masturbating bear" sketch on prime-time? or his little sock puppet dog who humps other dogs? :)

quote:
Originally posted by Jeff Thomas: ... would be received if it was directed at the media's darling, President Clinton? ...[/quote]I recall something similar being said on a local radio station about a year or two ago. Even though the comments were obviously made in jest, the radio station was fined, the two DJ's were fired and I later read in the local paper that criminal charges were being brought against them. Really didn't follow the story too closely so I'm not really sure what happened after that. However, it is never a good idea to joke about killing anyone because you never know who might be listening to it or how it will be received -- what might be viewed as a joke by some, might be viewed as an "invitation" by others and we all know that we have more than enough people in this country who have a light burnt out upstairs.

Someone needs to toss some chlorine over at ArsTechnica. After three posts, I was going to reply, but after a few more I realized that the place was nothing but a bunch of people making assertions with no reasoning behind them whatsoever.

I'm appreciating this place a lot more right now.

I'm sorry, I miss the guy on The Daily Show (Comedy Central).

Does anybody remember an incident a few years back when Clinton was making a public appearance at some kind of food festival (I believe it was in Chicago). A vendor told Clinton to his face "You suck" and he and his wife were promptly arrested.
