Large pistol primers magnum

Can anyone tell me if there is a problem with reloading .44 Spec. ammo with large magnum pistol primers, or reduced magnum loads with the magnum primers?

If you're loading something less than max, then no issues. If you're already at max I'd reduce the charge by at least a 1/2 grain and work back up.

Sometimes you just have to use what's available to you.

But I wouldn't ever load "reduced magnum" charges for a .44 special.

No problem, as both cases have the same volume when the bullet is seated to the same COL, as the SAAMI maximums for the two cartridges are. The magnum primer may do even better with reduced loads, as there is then more empty space for it to pressurize, and a lot of empty space is one reason for using magnum primers.

I think a better rule of thumb for changing to a magnum primer is to reduce the charge 5% of whatever it was with a standard primer, then work back up in three steps, watching for signs the velocity or pressure has exceeded what you started with.

Large pistol magnum primers have nothing to do with the cartridge. They're about the powder used.
However, if your manual says to use 'em for a particular powder, they won't hurt anything. If you use 'em without needing 'em, they might increase pressures.
Under no circumstances should you use magnum loads of any kind in a .44 Special. If you compare Mag and Special 240 grain cast Start loads on Hodgdon site you'll find the Special Max loads(roughly 13,000CUP) are very close to Mag Start loads(roughly 12,000CUP) for pressure.
