I've decided I need a 3rd gun for carry. When I want to carry a larger gun I have a Sigma 9mm that I sent back to the factory for a trigger job and now shoot it very well. When I want something smaller I can carry my Ruger LCR IWB or in the pocket in some pants. In some jeans the LCR just doesn't work well with the fat grips. I don't want to put the laser grips on it and I realize that eventually someone will come out with slimmer grips for the LCR but there are times that I wish for something smaller.

I used to have a Kel-Tec P3AT that was reliable but I traded because it would bang up my trigger finger after a few rounds. Does the Ruger LCP do this as well or should I be looking at another gun? Budget is $300-$400.

get another keltec380. If you install a extended grip, it makes a huge difference. Easier to control and dont bite your finger. the lcp is now 300bux at Budsgunshop also. I bought the p3at when the lcp's were having recalls. I just got tired of waiting.

You need a Sig P238 .380 as long as you can handle cond 1 in a pocket gun.
I carry mine cocked and locked in a Nemesis holster in my back pocket and its unnoticeable.
But not only that, its in a different league as the LCP and P3AT as it wont hurt you with recoil and sharp edges. Its actually fun to shoot and the recoil is even less than my PPS 9mm,im talking in "relative" terms about less recoil.

It can be had starting at $400 and i picked up my 2 tone with stainless slide for $450,the hard part is finding one.

The Sig looks nice but I'm not sure if I would be comfortable with cocked and locked for pocket carry.

You arent the first person to say that, and i really don't understand why.

Why do you feel cond1 carried gun in a holster isn't safe?
The safety on the P238 is very positive and it isn't moving unless you move it purposely. The gun as best as i can tell is a copy of the 80 series 1911 Colt, which imo is about the safest gun on the market. It does miss having a grip safety, but the hammer and drop safety is adequate imo.

I had a harder time getting used to carrying a PPS 9mm DAO gun in my back pocket than i did the P238,The reason is i can imagine the trigger getting getting caught somehow and it wouldn't take much for that trigger safety lever ala Glock style getting pulled with the trigger in a accident.
That cant happen with a 1911 style gun.

But by all means carry what you feel is safe.
Ill also add many people carry the Taurus PT709 in a back pocket and front pocket also in a holster of course. The only difference in that gun and this one is the Taurus is striker fired and the Sig has a hammer, but all safety are pretty much the same on these guns.

The weight of the Sig 238 makes it comfortable to shoot. Carrying cocked and locked with a pocket holster is completely safe. However, it is above your budget. The Ruger LCP will exhibit the same kick and bite as the Kel-tec. These little pistols are the proverbial "meant to be carried a lot and shot a little" pistols. When at the range, shoot a couple of mags full and then stop and shoot a gun that is fun to shoot.
