Laid Away a Gun Today.

Mosin-Marauder

I went to the LGS today and saw a Savage Axis is .22-250. I've thought about Savages a good bit and finally took the plunge today. It was $275 out the door. Paid $75 today and need $135 more. Excluding costs for a scope, which my cousin is going to sell me. Just wondering what kind of accuracy I can expect from this rifle. I liked the feel of this rifle. The trigger was nice, maybe a 3-3.5 lb break. Unspeakably better than my Mosin, a bit worse than that of my K-31. It didn't have iron sights, but I might add those later on if I feel the need. It also had a detachable magazine, I like that. The safety was also good, easy to access. The bolt had some slop in it. Nothing too bad. 1-12 twist rate on this specific caliber. Not going to hand load for it until later on. Going to buy commercial ammo for a good bit. I know recoil isn't going to be much because of the smaller caliber, which was a selling point for me. Anyway, just wanted to know what accuracy would be like with this rifle and if this would be an effective round for everything up to Whitetail. Thanks for your help.

22-250 is a tradtionally very accurate. You should easily get moa, probably 3/4 moa out of the box. It's a great cartridge, easy to load for. It is a barrel burner so allow for a minute or two between shots if you want to prolong barrel life. Ive just switched to a 1:12 twist and haven't done much development on it. It seems to like the 55gr and the 60gr but haven't tried anything heavier. Good choice mm. I'll check if I have any spare dies.

Looks like I have a spare sizing die, but needs a lock ring and a decapping pin. No spare seating die.

Thank you for your offer, 1stmar. But that won't be necessary. You've already gave me a great set of .45 Dies.

Also, a minute or two between shots? I can probably wait a minute between each. That seems reasonable enough to prolong barrel life. What is barrel life expectancy on one of these?

It's a bit light for deer, but if you can hit the boiler room it works. Energy is good to about 150 yards, but the round will deflect off a small twig.

I've heard everything from 1500 rounds to 2500. My rifle was bought used so no way to know for sure how many rounds through the first barrel. I don't count but I probably put 2000-2500 through it, maybe more. It initially started out as sub 1/2 moa. At the time I decided to rebarrel it it was moa, couldn't seat the bullets any further out. For me, I was only interested in the rifle for accuracy so moa wasn't getting it done. Very accurate cartridge, known for accuracy, wouldn't be surprised if you get 1/2 moa to 3/4.

You'll get more than 2k out of it. With the right loads if you start shooting under 1" if it gets "bad" you'll still be under 2".

I'll also say it's a bit light for deer. What if you wound one and he's {whitetail} running straight away from you --- would you feel that a tail shot 22-250 bullet --- is going to reach his boiler room?

If something unforseen happens maybe. But I don't hunt deer much anymore. No point in it, unless you want meat. Or are protecting crops. Many more things that are more fun to hunt. Coyotes, Groundhogs, rabbits, crows, paper, etc.

I looked at one in 25-06 but they only seem to come in 22 inch barrels, most people agree you need 24" to get the most out of a 25-06. So I passed on it. Love accu-triggers though.

You can get more velocity variations just from the load itself than those 2" will ever cause

Mosin, You are fourteen live in a state where there is good hunting and "I don't hunt deer much anymore". Shame on you, trade that .22-250 for a .243 and have your Dad or Uncle take you hunting...the best thing a kid can experience and when you are older than dirt (like me) your memories of the hunt, campfires, laughing with friends and relatives are priceless.
