Lady's Carry Gun

I'm looking for a purse gun. The budget is <$500.

I looked at a Keltec 9mm and thought it was decent. What do you think?

Anything else you would recommend?

I have a Kel-Tec PF-9. I would recommend it to anyone. I paid around $325 for mine, with a CAT laser on it.
The Ruger LCR is a nice little revolver, and the LCP is about the same size as a Kel-Tec, I have never fired either of them, but have heard good things.

Lcp 380 or a ultrs lite 38 revolver smith or taurus would be my 2 choices.
I have both with no malfunctions
Also consider KAHR 380 or 9

The Keltec PF-9 and P-11 are both good pocket/purse guns. I carried a PF-9 for over a year with no problems. However, due to the size and light weight, they both kick hard. I recommend shooting one before buying one. Only a little larger (but much easier-shooting) are the Taurus PT Mil-Pro in .380 or 9mm and the Springfield XDSC in 9mm. I've shot all three. My wife owns a Mil-Pro .380 and I have a XD9SC. All three are excellent guns. A "J" frame snubbie is also a good purse gun, but there's the recoil factor again. They can kick hard. I have a Taurus 85UL that I love.

I'm looking for a purse gun.

How big a purse? :)

Humoungous seems to be what's in style now. With what my youngest daughter carries (not quite as big as a gym bag), you could hide KelTek's .223 pistol and a half dozen magazines.

All of which is to say, a purse carry pistol needn't be pocket pistol size.

My wife carries a Bersa .380cc in her purse. It was the only gun she could easily operate (racking the slide, etc.), and the weight of the steel framed .380 makes it a breeze to shoot for the recoil sensitive. We went purse shopping, found one she liked, then velcroed an Uncle Mikes holster inside it. It was under $350 including purse and holster!

Not in the purse!

If someone grabs a woman's bag and that woman has a gun in her bag, how can she get at the gun? She'd have to overpower the guy just so she can get some control of her own weapon.

I was a woman when she had her bag snatched. The guy ran like a gazelle, turned the corner and was gone into the crowd. He had the bag in his control in 1/2 second and was gone. Unless one was a track & field superstar, there was really nothing one could do. If she'd have had a gun in there, he'd have gotten it, too.

A gun should be on one's person, not in something one is carrying. A woman's bag is the most tempting, accessible, easy-to-snag thing there is. Why put a gun in the first thing a thief will grab? It's tactically foolish to let someone also have a gun in addition to your ID, money, address, keys, etc.

I see that others have already brought up the issue of carrying a gun in a purse. I'm female, and considered it, but decided against it because a bad guy can too easily grab a purse and there goes your gun along with your driver's license, money, credit cards, etc. :/

That said, if you're looking at revolvers, the Ruger SP-101 retails for around $450.00 and is widely considered one of the best little revolvers for concealed carry. Unlike many guns in this class, it's built like a tank and can handle regular use with +P ammunition without damage to the gun or risk to the shooter. :-) The 2" barrel version weighs around 25.5 oz and the 3" barrel version (recommended) around 27 oz, about twice the weight of the ultralight snubbies, which makes it much easier to control when shooting and improves shot placement.

I personally have a Smith & Wesson Model 60, which is quite similar to the Ruger, and am happy with it. It retails for about $100 more than the Ruger, though. If I'd been able to find a Ruger when I was looking a couple of months ago, I'd have got it instead. Fortunately for you, they're available again -- the shortage appears to be easing. :-)

Well, at least *some* of the advice given was from a female. Me. ;-)

And I heartily second the advice on http://corneredcat.com/, which may have been down a few hours ago (don't know), but is definitely up as of this minute. It's one of the best firearms sites I've found on the 'Net. Kathy Jackson (the writer) rocks!

My wife and niece carry prelock Smith 37s in purse in a pocket holster. It is an option that can be "what if"ed to death. I have a bag I carry my "stuff" in, (there I said it- a man purse), that always has an older Colt Cobra, a speedloader and two speed strips, along with a buck knife folder. The Cobra and Buck keep my diabetic supplies, meds, cell phone, wallet, checkbook, mini flashlight, cigars and cutter/lighter company. If my purse is snatched, I guess I will be left to fend for myself with the J frame Smith or old Colt Agent I also carry in my pocket.

Taurus PT 111 for a 9, or the PT 145 for serious defense. My son's girl is 5 nuthin and 100 and nuthin - she loves the 45 with 185 Golden Sabres. Carry it in a Fobus.

I've become a fan of the cz82,9 mak,12 round magazine, ambi safety and mag release, and under $200.Get some CorBon or Blazer loads and you're in business.

What's gender got to do with it?

Heed not first the advice of males on the forum. Go to our own Pax's cornedcat.com for a good read on women, carry and guns.

I beg to differ.

Remember, not all males are "men" (the word used in the pejorative sense). Possession of a "Y" chromosome does not necessarily render a person's opinions suspect. Just apply the same filter you should apply to all advice on the 'net plus the usual male discount factor.

Pax's site has already been mentioned, but also, check out this web location:

Remember, only believe half of what you see and one quarter of what you hear. That goes double for what you get from the internet.

Do your own independent, confirming research when ANYONE gives you new facts on the web.

Also remember, even the idiotic stuff might have a kernel of truth buried in there somewhere.
