Warm and Fuzzy time. Hope they get the same "colorful" reception the next time.

And I'll bet that ". . . 35 people attended and all but a few signed up for membership" is like "12 children killed every day".

Moms meeting turns into debate on guns

By Luke Saladin, Post staff reporter

A organizational meeting to recruit members for the Northern Kentucky chapter of the Million Mom March escalated into a heated debate on gun control and personal rights.

The hour-long meeting, held at the Boone County Public Library on Thursday, was supposed to introduce interested people to the organization, which favors tougher guns laws. Instead, much of the evening was spent debating the constitutional right to bear arms.

Several people in the audience were opposed to gun legislation in any form and felt the Million Mom March was spreading false information.

The supporters of gun rights took particular aim at a statistic that claims 12 children are killed each day by guns. President Clinton has cited that same statistic when calling for new gun-control laws.

''I believe the mothers involved with this organization are not properly informed,'' said Pam Pope, a mother of two from Hebron.

''Too many of our rights have been taken away from us already, and these people don't seem to mind.''

Despite the opposition, Rene Thompson, state coordinator for the organization, called the meeting ''colorful'' but successful. Mrs. Thompson, who lives in Covington, said about 35 people attended and all but a few signed up for membership.

''Obviously those who hoped to disrupt didn't sign up,'' she said.

The Million Mom March supports mandatory training and registration for both guns and owners.

The group also opposes a recently passed state law that authorizes the sale of confiscated weapons to licensed gun owners and dealers.

''If a gun is used to shoot a police officer or child, is it really appropriate to put that gun back on the street?'' asked Stephanie Kleinberg, one of the local chapter's organizers.

Ms. Kleinberg said the organization would not be deterred from reaching it's goals and continuing to recruit new members.

''We've moving ahead,'' she said.

''We have goals, and no matter how challenging they are we are going to meet those goals.''

The next meeting will be in August, but the time and place have not been set.

I'll gladly open my home to any homeless guns out there. :)

How sad that when the protesters questioned the validity of the 12/13 children a day stat., the "journalist" just notes that Clinton, a known liar and perjurer, has used the same statistic. Luke Saladin doesn't try to find out what the truth is. What a joke journalism has become.

Freaking fools!!!!!!!!!

Putting a gun back on the street? What does that even mean? Ok, just because the gun was taken away before because the previous owner improperly used it doesnt mean it will fly around the streets killing people. It will join somebodys collection, and will be properly used, and well taken care of.
Also, selling confiscated guns can generate money for the city, and that money can go towards, uhh, homes for the homeless or something.

"[Even if there would be] few tears shed if and when the Second Amendment is held to guarantee nothing more than the state National Guard, this would simply show that the Founders were right when they feared that some future generation might wish to abandon liberties that they considered essential, and so sought to protect those liberties in a Bill of Rights. We may tolerate the abridgement of property rights and the elimination of a right to bear arms; but we should not pretend that these are not reductions of rights." -- Justice Scalia 1998
