Ky. Congressman Won't Nominate Gore

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- The only Kentucky Democrat in Congress says he will not vote for Al Gore's presidential nomination because of deep differences over tobacco, abortion and gun control.

''I'm pro-life and he's pro-choice,'' Rep. Ken Lucas said in a telephone interview Thursday. ''I'm for the tobacco farmer and the tobacco industry here in Kentucky and he is not. I'm for Second Amendment rights. So we just have some major differences.''

Consequently, Lucas said he will abstain when fellow delegates vote for Gore's nomination next week at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.

Lucas, 66, is seeking a second term in Kentucky's 4th District, a conservative bastion that was represented by Republicans for more than 30 years until Lucas' election.

''One of the nice things about a person of my age is that it allows you to have a fair amount of independence,'' he said. ''I'm not planning on being there for 20 or 30 years, so I can really sort of speak my peace and be who I am and let the chips fall where they may.''

Lucas said he hasn't decided who to for in November.

''We'll see how it shakes out,'' he said.

... which all sound great to me, except I'm wondering, why is this guy a Democrat ?

The party has defined itself by those 3 issues, plus a few others, and is no longer the 'party of the people' or the labor party.
How could anyone who holds those positions align himself with that party ?

The party has changed somewhat over the years. Also, maybe the Democrats needed a candidate and Lucas wanted to run and didn't like the Republican. Who knows? Here in Missouri we have one Democrat rep, Ike Skelton, who is, and has always been, very pro RKBA. He's not in my district, but I'd vote for him over a lot of so called republicans (can you say Pataki, Lazio, Guliani?). He's kind of a hold over from the days when there were a lot of conservative Democrats, particularly in the South. In days past the Dems were supposed to be more for the blue collar working man and the Repubs more for the white collar businessman. This was more the major difference rather than liberal vs. conservative social issues. You could be a Democrat and still be fairly conservative. My parents were hard working blue collar folk and were staunch Dems. They were also very fiscally conservative and somewhat socially conservative(couldn't stand McGovern, Jane Fonda or Vietnam protesters for example). This was not necessarily a contradiction in those times.

He's my rep. I didn't live here when he first was elected so I don't know about why he ran as a Democrat. He seems to be a good guy (co-sponsors a lot of things with Ron Paul IIRC).

(of course he will probably make me eat my words that I will never vote for a Democrat again :D )

At least it shows that the Kentuckians in that particular district listen and vote for their representatives on the issues and not necessarily the party line. Don't you wish folks would do that everywhere?

Who cares what party or group he's in?

Democrat, Republican, Human Being - It doesn't matter as long as he supports honest gun-owners and gun-rights.

It's actually beneficial for gun-owners to have people speak the truth from all parties...

It would be ok to vote for a pro-RKBA democrat provided that they don't turn around and vote for anti-gun congressional leadership.

Anti-gun leadership will do a hundred times more damage than a single anti-gun congressman.

Why don't those of you who want to vote for a conservative democrat - get them to pledge not to vote for anti-RKBA people in leadership positions. Otherwise you are just defeating yourself by voting for them.
