Knight's Armamement Rail Interface System for AK-47's.

I just put a blurb up about this on my site(with accompanying links). I wanted TFL'ers opinions, because I'm an AK owner and would consider purchasing this unit. Here's the snag--part of the rail interface goes over the gas tube. Can this cause overheating?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nobody can tell me whether or not the gas tube can overheat from the RAS being mounted on it?

No AK experts out there?

I doubt it would.

It looks like there's as much (if not more) ventilation than with the traditional wood upper handguard.

there was a test of the Ultimak foreward AK mount in SGN

they said it got very hot after a few mags

this is a replacement gas tube with a weaver rail cast on
it's quite the coupled heat sink
i would bet the heat would be detrimental to the optical sight mounted above

the RAS looks like it mounts over the gas tube & is more isolated from the heat

Gas tube, although a bit more rigidly mounted than receiver cover,
is still a bad place for any kind of precision sighting devices. It can
theoretically move in the process of firing, and reinstallation after cleaning does not provide 100% return to zero. Heat is another serious factor, as mentioned above. I would personally never
use AK gas tube or receiver cover as a platform for mounting of any kind of serious sights.

here is the Knights unit:

here is the ultimak:

the mounted sight is either going to have the dot way down in the scope,
or a separate zero than the iron sights

If you can't mount a rail on either the top receiver or the gas tube, where the heck can you put it? I know that some AK's are built with a sight mounting apparatus on the side of the lower receiver, but this seems kind of limiting.

How good is the side mount on the lower receiver, and will it allow for more than just an optical site, i.e. night vision and optical site together?

AK receiver is a natural place to mount scopes and stuff.
I do not see why it is "limiting". Gun receiver is the most common place used to attach scope mounts/peep sights. All military AKs
along with factory commerical AKs have mount attached to the
left side of receiver, which is the only way to build a reliable
sighting system.

Kobras come in both the original side plate mount & in the new weaver mount

i would expect plastic melt down with a kobra on the ultimak

The best thing about the siderail mount is the ability to remove and reattach your red dot or scope in a matter of a few seconds w/o any loss of zero. That's the beauty of AK's and accessories, everything is designed on the KISS principle.
