Not sure this is the place to post this.

My son had the privilidge of holding Kit Carson's Hawken Rifle. I had forgotten that he had willed it to the TAOS NM Masonic Lodge. I am thankful that he shared the experience with me.

This event reminded me of the collection of Hawken Rifles which is maintained at the Mint in Carson City Nevada. I encourage all of you who travel through or near Carson City to skip the casino's for a few and view this collection.

Our support in these times will insure that our heritage is preserved for the next generation.

Yes, Kit Carson was an active Mason. He was and so were a great many other Americans from Colonial times to the present. Many of our founding fathers, and many figures in the westward movement and expansion of our nation. I would say your son is a lucky guy to have held it in his hands.

Enjoyed your post.In Ft Collins,Co,we had Cache La Poudre Rifleworks, the late Mike McCormick, proprietor.Mike was a fine man, honest trader, and had a wonderful inventory, from trade beads and patterns,to muskrat skulls,to furs, books, rifles, locks barrels, stock wood, etc. He supported Buckskinning ,and Skookum days, that took the history to kids.

From Mikes shop,I bought John Bivins book on The Hawkin Rifle(very good).
I also have a full set of blueprints taken from Mariano Modina's rifle.
I used a Griffin Hook breech,Sharon 54 bbl,Ron Long lock and double set.
My rifle is pretty similar in length and line to Carson's.If I get out that way,I'll try to remember.

I could be wrong, but a vague notion tells me Mariano Modina's rifle is at tbe Museum of the Fur Trade ,Chadron/Ft Robinson,Nebraska.

Excellent post.

Your son is one lucky lad. I have only seen one Hawken, in person but was not allowed to hold it. Perhaps someday ... ;)

I whole heartedly agree. The mock up of a ghost town there is also interesting. Very erie looking and sounding with dim lights and the wind howling. The casinos are good for the lunch buffet though.

Virginia City is also very interesting and full of history. They also re-enact shoot outs in the street. Looking at it now its hard to believe 30,000 people use to live there.
