I just purchased my first 1911 style gun. The gun I chose was the Kimber Ultra CDP. Can anyone with experience with this pistol, please share any tips, tricks or techniques you might have? Thanks in advance.
Good Choice! Here's a pic of mine (which was a birthday gift from my wife! ), along with the Galco Jackass holster rig I bought used from a fellow 1911 FORUM member:
I like this gun! It has proven to be very reliable with any of the 230g FMJ hardball & 165g to 230g HP defensive ammo I've put through it. Never a FTF or FTE yet.
I did have a problem with the slide locking back before the magazine was empty. I could have called Kimber or bought one from someone like Wilsom or Brown, but instead I tuned it by removing some material from the small tab that sticks inside the frame & is activated by the magazine follower. It seemed to stick out into the mag well much further than it needed to. When shooting full power 230g FMJ loads, the recoil force would allow the rounds to move forward in the magazine a little. When this happened, the fat 230g FMJ bullet would just nick the little activation tab on the slide stop & move it up, locking the slide back. It still works when the last round is fired, but doesn't lock back early anymore. It alsways worked correctly with HP defensive ammo.
It kicks a little, but not so much that you won't like shooting it! But, as it is a carry gun it gave me all the reason needed to convince my wife I had to have a full sized 1911 as a range gun. Then I bought the 5" Classic Stainless.....
My first suggestion is to go take a look at http://www.1911forum.com , there's a wealth of information there.
Second suggestion is to get someone (who knows how to do it) to show you how to put the slide stop back in (after field stripping) without scratching the gun. Seems this is the most common 1911 newbie mistake. The guy that sold me my Wilson showed me how to 'stage' the slide stop on the plunger, then simultaneously push up and in to get the slide stop to seat. I've done it this way a dozen times and have yet to scratch the gun.
If you haven't shot it yet, be sure to clean and lube it before taking it for a spin. You don't have to strip it to bare bones. Just take the slide off and clean the barrel and whatever you can see or reach with a Q-tip,and lube it. And don't scratch the frame with the slide stop!
There's a new Kimber in my future, too. Just can't decide between a Compact CDP or the Ultra CDP.
