Kimber Ultra Carry vs. Kahr

I have both an ultra Carry and a P-9. The Kahr is noticably smaller & lighter than the UC and is a more attractive choice for pocket or ankle carry. Than being said, both are still small & ligjht enough, both are accurate & reliable, so it boils down to SAA vs DAO and .45 vs 9mm. I prefer the UC ( I have big hands and can get a better grip), but I still find myself with the Kahr fairly often when a little more discretion is required. I feel adequately armed with either.

AP, have you had a look at the MK9? If you're after concealability, the smaller Kahr is 1/2" shorter than the 'regular' K series in both height and length, which helps. I don't have big hands, but they're not small, either. I find tucking my pinkie under the mag well works just fine.

I had a Kimber Ultra Carry and found the gun to be too small for the cartridge and very tough to control a second shot from.

Sold it and went to a Kahr MK40. Still a hand full to shoot but the weight is right for the cartridge.

For me, the MK 40 is the smallest and most powerful that I could successfully control.

I shot my CHL instructors Kimber Ultra Carry and found it to have too much recoil, and I enjoy shooting my .454 and 7.62 Tok. I now have a MK40 that I but a little stronger springs in , I think 22# and I shot Cor-Bon 135 through it no problems and not unpleasent.

Of all the many pistols I own, I find that I carry my Kahr MK9 the most. It is sooooo easy to conceal and is very shootable. At 10 yards the MK9 out shoots many other pistols.

I have the UC, but I don't shoot it all that much. I have never found it all that unmanagable with standard 45 loads, but it is a bit big for my tastes. I bought it to replace a model 36 S&W, but after carrying it for a few months I bought a model 60 S&W to replace the 36 and the Kimber both as my carry piece. It was defintely a down scale in power, but it was a practical decision based on the fact that I was starting to get lazy and not carry the kimber. I can't say that the Khar would react with me any differently, if I can't comfortably (and unobtrusively) stuff it into a pocket I probably won't carry it.

Kimber

I am by no ones standards a bear of a man( 5'8" 160 lbs) and I carry an Ultra Carry every day in a IWB. I also shoot it more than most people do a compact, 50 rnds a week. And I dont feel much more recoil in it than I do with my full size 1911s. Kahrs are great but IMHO I would rather have those big ole 230s going in a BGs body if God forbid I ever have to shoot for real again.

Well, I can't speak of the Kahr but can speak of the Kimber. I carry an Ultra CDP.

To me, there is no better choice for a single action carry in a .45 than a light weight 1911. The Kimber weighs 25 oz empty (I did weigh it loaded but forget that number). It does recoil more than my 5" Classic Stainless as I would expect it to; still I find it contollable and accurate at combat distances. I've never benched it at 25 yards to check for target accuracy.

For extended range sessions, I'll take the 5" gun. It definetly is less strain on your wrist!

I find it too large for pocket carry. If I am going out & need to have a pocket gun I give up caliber & carry a Colt Mustang in .380ACP or, for even tougher CCW, a KelTec P-32. The Kahr may allow major caliber carry in a wider variety of situations with clothing a consideration.

Finally, there is the SA & DAO thing to consider. I'm a better shot with SA, although admittedly have not shot DAO nearly as much.

Hey - do like Mike in VA did - get both!

Drundel,

Where did you get the springs for your MK40? I have one and find the recoil to be a bit snappy. Overall, great little gun.

AnklePocket,

Kahr's are very nice. The MK series is almost 3/4 inch shorter than the regular K series. The have some good articles from various gun rags on their website. www.kahr.com.

I have never shot a Kimber but I lust after one. I am looking more in the full size range for a nice .45 so I guess the UC isn't what I would get. What Mike said may be the deciding factor if you have large hands. See if you can shoot both before buying. Kahr's aren't cheap but then neither are Kimbers.

Good Luck on your decision.
