Kimber Series II firing pin safety concerns

I realize that this has probably been beaten to death but please humor me. I have three Kimbers...all are pre series II...and all are great guns. I am in the market for a new Kimber and it will naturally have the new "II" safety. I have heard alot of bad stuff about these and some good. I do not know if I will have problems or not. I do not know if I will like it or not. I only want to know that if I decide that I don't like the "II" safety, can it be removed and the gun returned to Pre II specs without problems or difficulty? What is the process? Can I do it myself? If not, what would a gunsmith charge? Will any visible holes be left in the gun? Anything else on this subject? Any and all info/replies/comments will be appreciated.

Thanks!

You won't even know it's there. It's designed differently than the Series 80 Colts, which are notorious for mushy triggers. The leverage to free up the firing-pin comes from depressing the grip safety, not from your trigger finger.:)

Well VictorLouis, I appreciate that BUT apparently some people are noticing it is there or there wouldn't be so much bad stuff written about it. It appears that the problems really manifest themselves in the Pro and smaller guns. I am not really looking at pros and cons of the "II" safety as much as I am interested in removal possibility if I didn't like the "II" safety or had problems with it. I am a true believer in the "if it 'aint broke, don't fix it" philosophy and my pre series II guns work just fine. I do not think that they should have changed the entire line just to accomodate 2 states that have idiots making the laws. But that is neither here nor there. If I buy a "II" gun and it works...great...I will most likely leave it alone. If I buy a "II" gun and it has problems stemming from the "II" safety, I want to know if I can remove it and have the gun function just like my pre "II" guns. If this is possible...great. If not, I probably won't buy one.

Thanks!

Sorry, that I can't answer.

I know the Colt's parts can be removed, but slave pieces must be installed in the frame to keep the innards in proper alignment. I was not aware of any problems with the new Kimber unit, other than curmudgeonly types who just grumble about it being unwanted/not needed.:) Any chance you could direct me to a link or two?

I just bought my 5th Kimber! The first 4 were all series I, and only one gave me some problems when it was new ( a Royal Carry). I sent it back to Kimber, and got it back in less than a week, It's been fine ever since. My last Kimber; a Pro Eclipse is a series II, and I was kind of hesitant about getting it because of what I'd read in Gun Tests. I think Gun Tests got a lemon, and reported the problems they encountered as being series II related. Mine has never malfunctioned. Of course it only has between 4 and 500 rounds through it, but I would think that if I were to encounter problems, it would be during this 'breakin' period. I think you will find that Kimber has really tested these guns out, and even though any company can produce a less than perfect specimen, Kimber stands behind their products and I'm sure would make it right for you. If you want one, buy it!! It will certainly be the most value for the money of any other 1911 design on the market.

I have a Pro CDP II. Out of the box it was fantastic. Has been that way ever since. Sorry, I cannot answer your question regarding removing some "innards".:)
