Kimber - quick price check & questions

What would you expect to pay for a Gold Match Stainless, or the Gold Combat Stainless?

What about the custom stainless? Would this be a good "project gun", to add a match barrel/bushing and trigger work to later on?

I want a reliable, accurate target gun with some "extras", and I would like to avoid gunsmithing if possible. I would rather pay a little more, and have the gun all set for target shooting right out of the box.

Ditto what the guy from VT says.
When you add up all the extras, you're at or past the cost of the others. That, plus adding all those extras to a Kimber add nothing (or very little) to it's value. An 18 hundred dollar Wilson is worth 18 hundred dollars. A thousand dollar Kimber w/ 8 hundred dollars worth of extras is worth a thousand dollars.(there's a very good thread here from a few weeks ago about that). Even though you might plan on keeping it for the next several generations, you never know.

Gold Combats (though not sure if in stainless)are running 1500+ in my neck of the woods, about the same for Les Baer pistols that will be worth more if you have to sell or trade.

Now if Les would make a pistol that looked just like the pro CDP, I would be in heaven :D

If your willing to spend a couple of hundred dollars more, go with a Wilson CQB. I own one and I can't say enough of how great it shoots, and the overall quality and fit of the gun...

Kalifornia-approved Wilson CQB cost is $1795 with the tactical safety. I believe it'll be an extra $30 or $50 to have the MIM parts (sear & hammer) replaced. Terry from http://www.pt-partners.com has one in stock and he'll pay shipping plus up to $50 for your FFL transfer. I've bought mine from Terry and highly recommend him.

Kimber Gold Match Stainless already has a match barrel, etc. They are selling you a gun with all the work already done.

I paid $1050 mail order from jimejordan@earthlink.com, gun store on the border of east Texas. He delivered new unopened in box on time at best price. Tell him to Fed-X and not US Mail though.

Added Chip McCormick "powermags" in 8 & 10rds.
Added Hogue rubber grip w/ finger bumps.

The only diff on the combat is checkering on the front of the grip & trition sites rather than the target sites. Costs a lot more for nothing.

You are already paying $1000 for a $600 gun, I don't see how much better an $1800 Wilson will be. Maybe $75 better? There is always STI for $3000 and they have some unique versions that are cool.

I didn't realize the difference either until I owned my first Wilson Combat and held it up to my Kimber CDP.

Comparing the two, Kimber would be like dating your high school prom queen, Wilson would be like dating Playboy's Playmate of the Year.

Both are cool, but which would you rather be seen with?

Neither. :D

For that kind of money consider buying a base gun (no more than $600) and have a pistolsmith do $1,200 of customization. That will EASILY cover all the stuff that matters: no-kidding reliability, superior trigger job, better sights and oversized match barrel fitted.

I eventually got around to doing that and, IMHO, the results are self-evidently superior. No *company* will give you as good customer service as a single pistolsmith who is dedicated to doing the job right. The rub, of course, is finding the right person in the first place. I'd suggest BCP based on my experience with my Colt Delta Elite, but there are *alot* of other good choices. http://www.burnscustom.com

Going with a semi-custom piece isn't a BAD choice (far from it actually), and may even get you fractionally more features for the dollar. You will also get the gun more quickly, so if you can't wait then a WC or Baer makes more sense. But it is a one-size-fits-all proposition, and in the unlikely chance something goes wrong you may be wondering who exactly the buck stops with.

Food for thought.
