Kimber Pro Carry

What is the general opinion of the Pro Carry from a shooting standpoint? Does the aluminum frame hold up with a lot of shooting or is it more a carry a lot, shoot a little kind of weapon? Shooting standard 230 gr, 850 FPS JHP's, no +P's. TIA

I don't have direct experience with the Kimber aluminum frame Pro Carry, but I note that the Standard Catalog of Firearms makes this statement about the corresponding Colt Commander:

"The Combat Commander was produced in response to complaints from some quarters about the excessive recoil and rapid wear of the alloy-framed Commander. This model is simply a Commander with a steel frame."

Althought the Kimber is based on the Colt design, it is possible that the aluminum used today is better than in 1949, when the Colt alloy Commander was introduced. Aluminum is clearly inferior to steel in hardness and wear resistance, but is adequate for many applications and is widely used. If I were getting a compact 1911 for carry, I'd get an aluminum Pro Carry and not worry about the wear, because I like the 5 ounce weight savings over steel and I doubt if I would ever wear one out. For heavy range use and recoil absorption I'd stick with steel.

Well I just bought a Kimber Ultra Carry with the Aluminum frame and Kimber says 20,000 rounds with no measureable sign of wear. So I would think it could go alot more than that. The aluminum is suppose to be the strongest. We will see..:D

Alum Kimber Pro Carry

I had one and the thing was ajam o matic, the metal was being grooved by the hollowpoint tips when they fed into the barrel!!!
Regardless of what Kimber says I've heard waty too much bad on them.
I traded it in on non aluminum stainless model (not really that much heavier) and it is my most reliable 1911, really love it!

Thanks. I found a previously owned Pro Carry embossed/Laser etched (whatever) with an NRA logo and I thought it looked cool. It isn't a collector because it's already been fired but seems very clean. I love the slide.

If I have problems such as encountered by BrooksTexas, or the frame gives me any problems, I'll just move the slide assembly and other parts over to a Caspian Ti frame. They're a little heavier, but much tougher than the Al alloy. Actually, I may just buy the Ti frame and make the change regardless. Thanks again.

Personal experience with Kimber Pro Carry!

I own and carry a Kimber Pro Carry (aluminum) such as you describe. Bought it NIB and immediately had some problems with the slide staying open on a random basis. Took it to my gunsmith (he is licensed (?)/recognized by Kimber as one of their own) who did some minor adsjustment with a diamond file - no charge. That was over 1000 rounds ago and have had absolutely no problem since. A close examination evidences no observable wear or any other kind of problem. It has been 100% reliable since the initial difficulty and accuracy has been consistenly good. Given my experience with this Kimber Pro Carry I would most certainly not hesitate to buy another. Good shooting:)

Thanks for the positive feedback. I've never really liked Alloy frames (everything I have is steel), but I'll give this pistol an honest trial before doing anything radical.

I have heard reports of the aluminum 1911 style frames being chewed up by hollowpoint ammo. Caspian sells an aluminum frame with a steel insert in the feed ramp to eliminate this possibility.
