Kimber "Plastic" Main Spring Housing

My education is continuing regarding the Kimber Compact 45s I purchased prior to finding "The Firing Line" web site.

I have seen several references to "plastic" main spring housing on the Kimbers. Now, I do not pretend to be an expert on gun parts or their names. However, I have referred to the chart that came in my Kimber manual.

Perhaps the main spring housing was manufactured using MIM technology. Is that what is being referred to?

I think most folks think "soft" - and possibly "brittle" - when they see the label "plastic." The main spring housing on my Kimbers is not soft. I have yet to encounter the situation where it would seem to be brittle.

So, would someone please enlighten me as to the problem with the mainspring housing?

Both of my Kimbers were purchased new within the past 4 months.

Thanks.

What's to tell? The mainspring housing on my Kimber is a chunk of injection molded plastic. Never said anything was wrong with it, but I am having a stainless steel housing installed. I just don't want any plastic parts on my Stainless Gold Match. Can't mess with tradition you know.

Yes it is plastic. Then again so is the mainspring housing (and trigger) on current Colt pistols. Colt pistols such as the CCO are also using McCormick hammers and sears made from the dreaded MIM proccess. Since Colt is using them they must be some of those "same but different" parts. Heaven forbid that we should criticize a pony pistol. There is absolutely *nothing* wrong with the plastic housing from a functional standpoint. That being said, I did replace the housing on my Kimber with a steel one from Wilson but that's just personal preference (no, you don't have to pay some "professional" to do it for you). I intend to have my pistol refinshed somewhere down the line and would like the mainspring housing to match. If you choose to keep the plastic housing rest easy, there's nothing wrong with it.

yes the housing is plastic and yes I've seen one fracture at the top by the retaining pin hole, while disassembling the gun. :(
