If you are right handed & want a high quality security or level II/III type holster you have a lot of good choices.
If you plan to carry the Kimber 1911a1 model in condition 1 or "cocked & locked" you also have a few good picks.
I'd suggest these websites; www.Blackhawk.comwww.Galcogunleather.comwww.Kirkpatrickleather.comwww.Safariland.comwww.Miltsparks.comwww.MitchRosen.comwww.HighnoonHolsters.comwww.COMholsters.comwww.Blade-tech.com .
The Safariland SFS or the new ALS(check name on the site) are well known for retention. To my knowledge, many US Navy SEALs pack the compact Kimber pistols in a SFS holster. The Blackhawk SERPA is useful too. It's easy to change from paddle to belt or to convert it to crossdraw/FBI cant/highride etc.
Thanks friends, I forgot to say that I did not want a thumbreak type of holster. I will check out the websites that were mentioned. I do plan on carrying condition 1, so I need to fork out for the best . I would like to know however,if I can minimize finish wear on the pistol someway. I carried my xd-sub in the factory supplied holster and was dissapointed in the way it wore on the finish. Duhh ... probably should have just never removed it from the thing.. perhaps there is a leather level 11 or 3 made for the Kimber? guess i'd better search as You know the cost of Kimbers are a lotmmore than the XD's .. would like to protect my investment
If you want to give your kimber some long-term protection, ship it to robar guns in arizona & have them plate the frame, slide, & internals with their famous "np3" finish. Yes, it is pricey, but it will last you a lifetime !!!!!
After market coatings/treatments; level II/III holsters...
I agree that a good after market plate or coating job with plated pistol mags is a great idea if you have the time & $$$. The Robar NP3+ is very good but not cheap.
Other high quality coatings include www.Bearcoat.comwww.APWcogan.com or www.Black-T.com . Bearcoat offers a price break for more than 1 pistol magazine too.
Black & Green T coatings are in use with many spec ops & law enforcement units.
As for holsters, a bodyshield or strap may help prevent wear, Highnoon Holsters sells a well made synthetic rig you may want. I'd heard some kydex/polymer designs can mar or scuff handguns too.
There are still many great choices for a 1911a1 Kimber pistol(right hand).
