kimber extractor question

I read a faq somewhere that the extractor on a 1911 type pistol should just hold an empty case on the breech face if properly tuned. Well I just bought a Kimber custom-classic stainless, which is my first 1911 style pistol. There is no way the extractor would hold the a empty case in place. There is a bit of a gap between the extractor and rim, when the case is slid underneath. I haven't had the chance to shoot the gun yet, so I can't say if there will be any problems. Should I be worried. It seems to extract fine when manually operating the slide.

Your extractor does need adjustment. For a good "step through" of the process I'd recommend going to
http://www.m1911.org/technic.htm

About the third article down is by Bill Wilson on tuning your extractor.

It is my impression that Kimber does not "adjust" every gun that goes out the door. I own 3 and two of that three needed some adjustment on the extractor. One badly and one just needed a tweak. Also one shot so far from POA that I sent it back as a warrenty problem. They said they replaced the barrel - and also apparently adjusted the rear sight by a very significant amount - and it now shoots closer to POA. It was (is) an exceptionally accurate gun - it just didn't shoot anywhere near POA out of the box.

They're good guns, but the QC could stand a bit of support from management.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I understand that the Kimber extractor is an MIM part and that some have broken. If this is true, I would replace it with a spring steel extractor.

Don't know if they are MIM or not.

When I tuned mine they seemed to stayed tuned - at least so far.

I have no idea as to the amount of flex and/or spring tension you could expect from MIM parts - but I wouldn't think a lot - which, if correct, wouldn't make it the world's best choice for something like an extractor.

Thanks for the help. I probably will go out and test fire it first, to see if will still function fine and see if there are any other problems.
