Kimber external extractors as a custom shop option.

FYI:

I spoke to Kimber on the phone and they said right now, they do not offer sending in the slide and having an external extrator put on as an option.

Then I asked about external extractors being options on production guns, and they said nothing's in the works right now, but they will see how the LTP II works out before they move on it.

Too bad about not being able to send in to the custom shop, I would have bought an Eclipse and done it.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks an external 1911 extractor is a great solution to a nonexistent problem? The old GI guns ran just fine with internal extractors. My 1918 Colt still has its original one, and I have no reliability problems with it whatsoever. The reason why so many new guns have extractor issues is because most makers are using cheap cast or MIM steel. Ordnance specs called for quality spring steel. Sadly, nobody but Cylinder & Slide even makes 1911 extractors out of such material! The conventional tool steel of the premium Wilson and Ed Brown extractors is fine, but they are still sub-par compared to the old GI-spec ones.

In other words, what the 1911 world needs is not yet another re-design, but a re-visit of the original Colt/ Dept. of Ordnance drawings!

Righto, dsk. I'm sure glad that I bought a supply of extractors when the old mil spec ones were cheap.

'cause they were inexpensive, to fit in new 1911's and 'cause I did not know how well or long they would work.

DSK's answer is interesting, as I've always considered the internal extractor to be the Achilles' heel of the 1911. But I've never seen one out of spring steel.

Can I buy one of these myself?
