Kimber Compact CDP first impressions...

Finally received my Kimber compact CDP after a month 1/2 wait-when I called Kimber to complain about it the guy was very apologetic and told me he would personally go rip one off the rack in the next couple of days and send it-he kept his word, I got it a few days later.

I originally was quoted 1050.00 by the gunshop, but since I was paying cash Firarms Plus in Ft. Lauderdale FL gave it to me for 925.00 which I thought was a fair price. Good guys, I went there on a suggestion from a TFL'er and was happy.

Pros & Cons: LOVED the satin finish on the slide and the "meltdown treatment" man it feels good. The size is perfect for me and I can get three fingers around the butt. The gun was tight but functional. Didn't like the plastic MS housing of course, and the sights are probably going to be the first thing to go. Got a Rosen 5G and Rosen double mag carrier the thing dissapears underneath a light T-shirt. Ripped it apart last night to clean it and shot it today.

Shot PMC roundball primarily (250rnds), which was very controllable and accurate, I bought two 7rnd and 2 8rnd wilson mags with the Kimber, had absolutly no hiccups with the PMC ammo, even with the little mag that comes with the kimber. The kimber was dead-on accurate and ragged holes @ 10 yrds were the norm.

Hornady custom 230 grn +P JHP: OUCH!! These thing were blazers!! But even more accurate than PMC. No failures.

Federal Hydra-shok 165 grn PD JHP: These made the kimber sound like a deer rifle and the flash was ridiculous!! I am not going to use these to carry-I was blinded after the first shot-they shot a bit to the right (probably just me).

Cor-Bon 200gr +P JHP-Another kick in the teeth-the +p's in the alum, Kimber really kick-these turned in my best group of the day: 5 rounds could be covered by a quarter @ 15 yrds. That brought a smile to my face!!

Golden Saber 230gr JHP: No big deal shot well similar to PMC.

All in all I had three lockbacks with the kimber mag only: one with the COR-BON, one with Hornady, and Federals. Thats it. The little Kimber ran beautifully, and in the semi-dim gun range, the trituim front sight glowed just enough to attract my eyes to it.

The checkering on the front strap is plenty sharp, and after the +p loads my hands felt it and my bad left shoulder also. They also induced a flinch after a while which degraded my range performance after a while-blame it on me-cuz the Kimber was piont-of aim accurate from 7 to 25 yards.

I only shot the +P's for reliability and will not make a practice of that-I am giong with the Hornady's/COR-BON as these were the most controllable.

All in all what a gun!!!

I too was impressed when I shot my friend's Ultra CDP. Given its diminutive size as compared to my Pro Carry, I thought this little lightweight sub-Officer's model would bark like nobody's business. Boy was I mistaken. The gun was very controllable despite its light weight and small frame thanks to its dual recoil springs. The checkering on the grips and frontstrap provided excellent purchase. I put it through its paces through a couple El Presidente drills and a few spreadfire runs and the CDP performed excellently. The Ultra CDP is definitely on my wish list.

Funinsun: Give the 200gr ProLoad +Ps a try. They have hardly any flash out of my Pro Carry and are very controllable. They have excellent terminal ballistics and I have found them to be very consistent (read: accurate) in my 1911s and HKs. I trust my life to this load on a daily basis. Call John (the CEO) and tell him I sent you (800-729-6978); he'll take good care of you and give you your money back if you don't like the ammo!

I have an Ultra Elite(actually it's my wife's) and love it. She carries Federal PD 165gr in it. I've shot some Cor-bon 185gr+P in it and the recoil wasn't that bad. Their 165gr load feels like it's trying to take my hand off though. When she gets back from France we'll probably try some Proload. Good choice on the Wilson mags. I've had no problems with mine. Later, byerly

funinsun,

I just read an ad on the CDP series and it seems to be a really nice pistol. The ad spoke of a stainless steel slide and "...small parts...". Are these small parts still MIM or is Kimber now using forged parts for their pistols' internals?

Thanks for the info...
Mike

funinsun, aren't the sales people at Firearms Plus some of the nicest around? Of course, I'm trying to obey that law which requires us to buy one gun a month ;) so I've been giving them a lot of business lately which might have something to do with their "friendliness". Regards,
FUD

Yea FUD they are nice-I live in Miami so its a drive but its worth it, they have a HUGE handgun selection too. At least big for around here. When talking to Kimber they said FP was one of there better customers, so that also helped my case. Next firearm will be bought there, but no more ordering for now just gonna go in and pick one from the shelf-maybe a para-I dunno.

Will give those proloads a try.
