Killeen Luby's to close it's doors
KILLEEN, Texas (AP) _ Almost a decade after the largest murder spree by gunfire in U.S. history, the cafeteria where terror reigned for a day is scheduled for closure.
Despite the horrifying memories that many still foster, residents have continued to dine at Killeen's Luby's Cafeteria.
But, customers learned Wednesday that the cafeteria will be one of 15 Luby's to close on Sept. 8, manager Ken Borski said.
The parents of State Rep. Suzanna Gratia Hupp of Lampasas were among the 23 people shot and killed on Oct. 16, 1991.
Despite the personal tragedy, Hupp said she supported keeping the business open after the massacre.
``The community is going to lose a very valuable restaurant,'' Hupp, 40, told the Killeen Daily Herald. ``My brother and I placed a phone call to (Luby's) upper management the day after the incident and begged them to keep it open.''
Almost 40 employees will be relocated to other Luby's restaurants, the closest of which is in Temple, or will have to find employment elsewhere.
In the attack, gunman George Hennard drove his truck through the window of the cafeteria's dining area on Oct. 16, 1991, and began a lunch-hour shooting spree that also injured 20 other victims.
The gunman moved calmly through a group of more than 100 people, shooting as he went. After the massacre, Hennard turned the gun on himself.
