Killed my second deer today

With my M24/47 Yugoslavian Mauser, it was youth hunting day, so I threw on my Flecktarn and my Orange and headed out and waited (in the rain no less, was very worried about my gun rusting or the stock rotting), just as I was about to leave I saw a doe, and I shot it, sitting off hand with irons at about 60 yards I hit in 3" behind the shoulder, a bit higher than I wanted but it was a dead deer. 196 Grain PPU Soft Point, 170.2 Grains retained weight, which is pretty great for ammo that's not a dollar a round IMO (better than the anemic Winchester and Remington loads anyway). Nothing picture worthy IMO, pretty big deer though, 110 Pounds total. Had to track it a long ways though. Totally worth it, just felt like sharing I need to sleep now, lol.

Regards,

Thank you! I made sure to clean it very well when I got home though. I don't plan to hunt in the rain much anymore though, it was fun, nevertheless.

That sort of weather is no problem for your rifl3, clean it well afterward while recalling the hunt and good times. Congratulations.

good for you

Well, your two a head of me, and we won't hunt for at least a month (bow) and a half (gun). Good for you.

Iron sights......not a lot of people can claim they've killed a deer with irons in this day and age.....again, good for you.

An 8mm/196 behind the shoulder......yeah that'd do it, nice shot.

Thank you! Very happy after I found the bullet last night. I plan to hunt like this again, a lot more fun than in a stand. Will use my .30-06 Model 70 next time I go, though I'm going to keep using the Irons, as a scope wouldn't be an advantage at the distance I'm shooting IMO.

All hunts are picture worthy, especially successful ones! In the real world, its the spirit and joy of the hunt that make the memories, not size of the head gear on the prey. Congratulations and enjoy a deer stake! Post a picture of the cooked steak. :D

Some of the best trophies i.e. memorable hunts have been of the least picture worthy deer.

I have a doe that I got mounted because of how smart she was, and all the woodsman tricks and skills it took to get her! I have more personal pride in that one than the big bucks that I have.

Awesome man congrats. There is no better feeling than a successful hunt. I totally agree about big bucks in the rain. You can stalk very quiet in the rain, literally right up to their beds :)

Excellent ! Keep hunting ! :)
I was hunting with a friend once and we it started to rain heavily. We gave up and headed to camp. Never even looked fo agood stream crossing as we were soaked.
I camp we cleaned our guns . He had a Savage 99 and I had a Mauser M98.Guess who had a easier job of cleaning and drying !:)

Congratulations to the all weather hunter ! Be sure to remove the stock and let it dry out. If there is any of the stock that isn't sealed you might want to do so when dry. Dry and oil all the metal.

Good shooting! Years ago, I killed my first buck during a sleet storm. He was jumped from his bed and ran about 50 yards. Then he stopped to look back. I quickly had the sights on him and shot the animal through the neck. He dropped so fast that I thought I'd missed. 30-30 is a keeper!

Congratulations on your deer.

I'd be a little concerned about not getting an exit wound at 60 yds though, unless it traveled a good distance lengthwise.

Those exit wounds give most of the blood trail, which can really be important in wet weather.
