Kerry's VP Choice

Hard Ball

is John Edwards of North Carolina. Polls show that Kerry is not doing well in the South. Edwards may be able to help.

I always find it interesting that so much importance is placed on the Veep choice. The Veep is a tag along and has very little if any say in policy matters. The Dems could have the most pro 2A choice (Larry Craig?) as Veep and I still would base my decision based on the #1 guy. Bottom line...Who cares who the running mate is! :(

They get or lose votes, obi. Whether that makes any sense or not is another discussion, but the reality is, the veep choice is important. Look what Ferraro did to Mondale! :D

But this is a big relief. If Hitlery had taken the VEEP slot, she'd might have put Kerry over the top and then we have HER in the White House again.

Perhaps the biggest looser in Kerry’s selection is Hillary Clinton. By picking Edwards:
(a) If Kerry is elected, Edwards (as the VP) has four or eight years in the national spotlight to prepare for his Presidential run.
(b) If Bush is reelected, Edwards is pre-selected as the CENTRIST Democrat candidate: popular, charismatic, with a good sense of humor, and the ablity to raise funds. In essence, Senator Clinton antithesis in several of these key categories.

I don't think that Edwards will help Kerry much in the final outcome. Edwards was running for President because he was not going to be re-elected to the Senate. Edwards also did poorly in the southern primaries except for his home state (being from the south didn't do Al Gore much good!). Edwards also takes away Kerry and the Dems. complaint about Dick Cheney not serving in the military as Edwards didn't either.

The National Chamber of Commerce has said that they will break their tradition of staying neutral in presidential elections because they despise Edwards so much because he is a trial lawyer.

This could also be said about the American Medical Assc. One of Kerry's big issues is that health care is "broken". Well, the AMA will go all out against Edwards and support Bush. Who do you think the people will be more inclined to believe regarding health care; the AMA or an attorney who made $50 million suing doctors?

In 1995, Edwards set up a dummy corporation, with himself as the ONLY stockholder, to avoid paying almost $300,000 in taxes on Medicare. So much for Kerry's claims about Bush helping corrupt CEO's!

I also don't think that Kerry will want to do too many appearances together with Edwards. It will remind voters what a stiff Kerry really is!

Edwards is going to be a big piece of baggage when it comes to healthcare and tort reform. Medical malpractice costs are a problem for the consumers of health care because they contribute to the rising cost of healthcare. They also cause problems for the doctors in certain high risk specialties like surgery and OB GYN /Obstetrics where even a doctor with a clean lawsuit record has trouble getting med mal insurance in some states with a history of large Jury awards. This is causing a crisis in doctor availibility in some states like Pa., New Jersey, NY, etc.

It going to be a real drag for Kerry (good you lousy jerk) to explain how he is going to make healthcare more affordable for folks with Mr. Big Medical malpractice lawsuit award chained around his neck (I hope he chokes). The AMA will probably not be able to support Kerry. President Bush has been pushing for tort reform and for keeping med mal under control which does make healthcare more affordable. If the Repubs play it smart this could be a real winning issue for them with independent voters.

Don't forget, the VP is also the deciding vote in a senate deadlock. And its not uncommon that he will get to use that vote.
