Kelo v New London - More? Last?

Off and on, for a year now, we have been looking at the results of the Kelo v. City of New London decision. Well it looks like we're down to the wire.

Open this link and read some of the stuff that has transpired in the last little while... Including yesterday's (Monday, June 5, 2006) town council meeting that decided to ignore the Governor and the majority of the townspeople and go ahead with the evictions.

And then there were two! Susette Kelo and Pasquale Cristofaro are the remaining holdouts in the dispute over eminent domain. The rest have settled.

Oh, and the city wants back taxes, rents and fees to the tune of $946,000 to be split between the two remaining holdouts. That was Nine Hundred Forty-Six Thousand Dollars! ??? IIRC, the City only offered about $50K apiece for the properties....

Technically, these people haven't had title to the lands for about, what? Seven or eight years now? But this city wants back property taxes anyway... And Rent? Do they have a signed rental agreement? Fees? Not specified, but I'm sure they will come up with the appropriate paperwork...

As for the style of this post... Well, it's either this or I scream for a bloody revolution!
 
What's to say? Why get angry? This is handwriting on the wall and there is no serious way one can argue the SCOTUS did not know perfectly well what it was doing. The town council is simply testing the water, probably at the behest of bigger fish.

This is what big government is. This is what happens when little local governments know that big government is backing them up. They don't care what we want and why should they? As I have asked before what are we going to do about it? There obviously will not be any revolution, else "we" would already be out there taking a stand. In fact, it appears most of us can't even be bothered to write a letter on this...

It's a great lead in though for another question I've asked before: Where is your line, anyone? Will they have to come to your door? Maybe it's too late then... It's too late for Kelo and Cristofaro and we certainly aren't doing anything for them. It's about too late regarding NAIS. It's probably too late regarding the Illegal Invaders... It might be too late regarding binding treaties and foreign law superceding the Constitution. As such, whether it's too late regarding our guns is kind of a moot point...

I'm past wanting a revolution. I know it won't be coming. I'm just eating my popcorn while watching our national demise unfold. It's a pretty good show, once you get a handle on the blood pressure spikes...
 
Two replies. 43 views. So, Antipitas, is it just that people have forgotten the name Kelo and thus didn't bother to look, or is the entire issue just too big to wrestle with? I think it's the latter but, either way, it seems this kind of reflects on how easily Big Brother will get his way on this. Hopefully I'm wrong.
 
Scott: it seemed to me that media tried VERY hard to bury Kelo from the begining. I know that on most of the pagan boards/lists I'm on, everyone was focused on the Ten Commandments ruling: I authored LOTS of posts to the effect of "Screw the Commandments: check out Kelo!". I'm sure many others (in different venues) did the same, which seemed to get the word out: heard about many legilatures drafting bills to block ED abuse for awhile. Odd... I don't recall seeing much after the bills were drafted...
 
I thought the Gov had a pretty good solution. Why the city council wants to be blockheads is a mystery to me. I wonder how much of the taxpayers money has gone down a legal blackhole and how much more will be heading that way. Nothing worse than a sore winner.
 
2nd Amendment, actually I think that most peoples' attention span has limited out.

Right after the Kelo decision, there was a lot of fanfare, moaning and groaning. Many States started the road to change/modify their own ED laws.

What Happened? I can only comment on what happened in Idaho. Several Bills were authored. They all stayed in committee and died at the end of the legislatures term. When contacted, the Reps all said there was vertually no public outcry over the issue. No outcry, no problem. The Bills died.

I suspect that this is what has happened in other states.
 
Yeah, the whole 10C "issue" seemed tailor made to cover over Kelo. If I were paranoid it would make me wonder. :D But in the end what it says is people really are that short-sighted. What that says is FedGov will get away with whatever it wants and we'll do exactly nothing about it. That was sort of my point in the UN thread: Doesn't matter how nuts you think something is, if not enough stand against it it CAN and probably WILL happen.

I do see this as one more step along the path to dismantling the Republic. Whether it's a well orchestrated course or just another random action leading to a predictable result will have to depend on your personal level of paranoia...I'll keep my mouth shut there, for once. :)
 
Tom Blumer reports over at BizzyBlog on the final settlement of the Kelo v. New London debacle. A bittersweet end, if ever there was.

Now of course, the bigger question is how and hwy are all these politicians dodging the bullet? Taxpayers are generally very upset over the eminent domain issue. Yet the politicos are just not doing anything worthwhile!
 
This is a far larger issue than Americans really understand. For the first time in my lifetime, with the exception of gross corruption, local governments are beginning to take on the persona of FedGov....constituents simply don't matter when there's money, influence, convenience or sheer ego on the table.

Like the issues of the First, Fourth, Fifth and Tenth Amendment infringements in the past few years, I fear Gun Owners will see this too as "no big deal". The Second is being eroded daily by unchallenged infringements of the other Nine; but if the headlines don't mention guns, we think we're "safe".

Oh, I agree Rich.

It's the primary reason I hoist the alarm at all these court cases that seemingly have nothing to do with RKBA.

The catch: there are so many alarms these days, people are overwhelmed and can't be properly outraged at each. Result? They're outraged at none.
 
tyme, there is truth in what you said. I write, call, and e-mail my reps,(the modern equivalent to black powder and musket) but in the end, you get worn out. While I am not ready to give up, I do get frustrated sometimes.

I do however, get some comfort from our forefathers. They were a minority, who fought against tremendous odds and prevailed. I'm sure they wondered when the rest of the people were going to wake up.

If I go down, I'm going down kicking and screaming.
 
This thread reminds me of

the arguments I heard when the government took away our right to hunt wild animals. Many talked about revolt, how self serving our government had become, how people just didn't care, and that our government does not deserve to be respected. Now it's 50+ years later and a lot of our rights and freedoms have been erroded considerably.

The ED issue is still not on firm legal footing. One good thing about this ED is that it makes good headlines. So every negative ED event will be publicised which will keep the issue in the public eye. In my opinion, the laws on ED are about to be strictly limited.
