Kel Tec Sub 2000

Have been considering a shtf rifle for a while now. Not because I think zombies are coming nor because I plan on taking on the commi invaders or anything crazy.

My considerations are more based in reality. For example many in our area lost homes during hurricane Irene. Mine was safe but had it not been I would have needed to leave in a hurry.

The obvious answer is AR or is it? Sure it is a known and trusted platform that's not the debate here.

The reason I am thinking ob a sub 2k is because of the compability of my Glock handgun in .40

I could have a rifle and handgun that will run the same mags and same ammo. Therefore I really only have to bug out with a handgun and a long gun end of story. This would make a "go bag" an easier endevor as well being that it would only have to carry pre loaded mags that would function in either gun.

If it had to I figure a .40 cal rifle could feed us from deer on down and it would be acceptable for anti personell as well.

Thoughts?

Thats pretty much the role that gun was intended for. I've been trying to find one for awhile. a LGS has one in Glock 9mm but they want $400 for it, abit steep when you can get for $300 when they are in stock.

In an emergency situation, your focus is going to be survival not playing around like a downed pilot for days. Unless you live in a very rural area (in which case you should already be somewhat self-sufficient), your best bet is to either stay put and wait for rescue or make your way the nearest known/suspected travel way (major road) or populated area (public building). At which point, try (again) to make contact with family/friends/authorities and at least get an update on the situation and status of rescue operations. You want to be found by rescue workers as quickly as possible.

I'm not saying to not be prepared! An emergency bag with a few days worth of essentials is a great thing to keep for such a situation. However, if you live in a suburban area, do not go hauling off into the wilderness. Try to find help and resources along areas where there will be people actually be looking for survivors. In an extreme situation, where you would need additiional food (beyond what's in your bag already) a defense pistol and shotgun would probably serve best.

The best idea is to evacuate before all the trouble, if at all possble! If it's too late for that try to get rescues by others looking to help rather than just surviving on your own off the land.

The situation I mentioned with the hurricane went a little something like this.

http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/article/20110829/NEWS02/110829004/Vermont-devastation-widespread-3-confirmed-dead-1-man-missing

All of my towns roads were closed to the public for the best part of a month! 27 days to be exact. Being that my home was not damaged I hunkered down and did it the right way. Had my home been destroyed I would have had no choice but to throw it in 4x4 and get the hell out of doge (in my doge lol).

If that was the case I would have needed to go in a hurry and thus was thinking the KTS2k would be a good option.

Thanks, Vermonter
