kel-tec parkerized finish?

I've been carrying a kel-tec P11 in a smartcarry holster, and the slide has a few small rust spots near the muzzle end. Cliff at kel-tec said they would exchange my slide and barrel for parkerized ones for $15. Any comments as to whether or not the parkerized finish is more rust resistant? Obviously I need to use the silicone wipe more often, but I'm hoping the parkerized finish will help.

I'm assuming no FFL will be needed on my end for just the slide and barrel.

I've got the parkerized slide. The barrell also appears to have the same finish. While the slide is still in good condition, the exposed breech/chamber section, does show some signs of wear. The gun has not seen a whole lot of usage. If I had to do it over again, I would probably go with the chromed slide.

hehe Well hard chromed is one of the most durable finishes you can get on a gun. It will wear very well, and I believe you can trade in your slide for a hard chromed one for only $20. My Kahr carry gun is hard chromed and it was well worth the expense to have it done.

go for the chrome-i have one and it's a dull, silver finish.or have jack nickel plate the slide (another dull finish i've heard) and do a F&B on it (if you send the entire pistol) for 25.00-check out KTOG.ORG for all relevent info.

My P-11 is parkerized. I`ve carried it almost everyday for 4 years. Some days in the summer it`s actually covered in droplets of sweat at the end of the day and the only rust I`ve had is a little on the blued screws for the belt clip. FWIW this gun has a little over 5000rds. through it. The finish has worn off the right front corner of the muzzle from holsterless belt clip carry and it`s got some wear on the barrel hood but for some reason even the spots that are bare shiny steel refuse to rust. Since this gun is a "self defense appliance" and not a treasured keepsake I treat it as such. I wipe it down with a paper towel if it`s wet with sweat and I oil it VERY lightly when I clean it after shooting it at the range every few weeks. I`m very happy with the finish (and the gun :) ). after about 225 rounds thru my p-11 i had some failure to feed problems and sent it back to kel-tec and also paid the $20 to have the hard chrome slide/barrel put on. main reason was i didnt want to have to worry about rust as its my daily carry piece. as for it being a "pimp edition", id rather have it silver so that if i do ever have to pull it at night, the reflection alone is enough to scare off most, although it is a dull finish and not shiny chrome, its still less maintaince. the other thing ive noticed is that its easier to clean after shooting because u can see where all the black powder and grime is on the silver finish

$20 for exchanging blued slide for a hard chromed one? Maybe I'll get the chromed slide based on your comments and also get a parkerized barrel. Night sights, too. Yeah, that's the ticket. The sights suck on mine.

My only reservation is that my gun operates flawlessly, and I'm concerned that I'm going to have problems with a new slide/barrel. I know that getting a good functioning P11 is somewhat of a crap shoot, so to speak.

the $20 is for the slide & the barrel. as for it being a crap shoot for a good p11, just polish the feed ramp when u git the new ones and u should be good to go. when i got mine back i put 25 rnds of pmc, 50 rounds of cci blazers and 100 rounds of winchester whitebox's thru mine and had one fte around 60th rnd of the whitebox's, and i think that was my fault for week elbows on the shot.

My first P11 had major barrel/slide interference issues. I could see the gouges in the slide just by cycling the slide by hand, and I didn't fire a single shot before returning it to the gun shop. It was exchanged for another one on the shelf. I have had zero problems with this one with no fluffing and buffing on my part. Shooting and cleaning is more like it :).

best answer on the metal guide rod can be found at ktog.org and on the message boards linked off there site. ive heard of people firing up to 5000 rounds with no problems with the stock guide rod

There`s no advantage to the metal guide rod at all. It makes the gun marginally heavier and they tend to wear the aluminum frame where they come into contact with it. I`m one of the guys with 5000+rds. on the stock plastic guide rod in my P-11. Keltec sent me a replacement one a few years ago as an extra when I ordered a replacement recoil spring (also free BTW). It ends up the spring was the same or weaker than the one in the gun. I saved the parts for when the originals wore out,at least a little....I`m still waiting. :) Marcus
