Kel-tec 9mm vs. 40 cal.

Of the current kel-tec line, are the 40 cal.as good as the 9mm? Do they still need "buff & polish" fresh out of the box or has the company corrected that? If you've shot both, how comfortable is the 40 vs 9mm?

Mozart, I had the Kel-Tec in the 40 cal. first, Recoil was impressive to say the least. I traded it on something else and later bought a new Kel-Tec 9MM. I have become pretty accurate with the 9, which would never have happened with the 40. I now carry the 9MM quite often. Both guns have been very reliable without the buff and fluff refered to on K-Tog.

Mozart,

I own a P-11 9mm and have shot the P-40. While all Kel-Tec pistols will benefit from the "buff and polish" routine, it's not absolutely necessary on all of them. If you're not happy with reliability you can always opt to send the pistol back to Kel-Tec for repair instead of working on it yourself. Their customer service has a very good reputation.

Yes, the 40 kicks a bit more than the 9 but I didn't find it unpleasant. I might if I had shot it more than 8 times though.

The benefit, to me anyway, of the 9 over the 40 is that you can get S&W model 59 hi-cap magazines that fit right into the 9. Kel-Tec even makes a slip over adapter for the mags so that when you use them you have a full size grip.

I haven`t shot a .40 Keltec,I bought my P-11 long before they came out. I`ve thought about buying the conversion kit but my P-11 has been sooooo reliable as is that I can`t bring myself to mess with it. I do load my P-11 exclusively with +Ps though and recoil, while brisk is quite managable. I like being able to carry full size hi caps for spares when clothing permits. The new Keltecs are finished much nicer than the older ones, F&B would most likely be just icing on the cake. Marcus

I have the KelTec P11 9mm, and I've shot the .40. IMO, the .40 recoil was enough to make recovery and follow-up shots slower. Also, the .40 is a bit bigger than the 9mm model.

I'm the same as most of the others. I own the P-11 and have shot the P-40. From what I read at the Kel-Tec owners group website, the P-11,generally speaking, is more reliable. It has been around a lot longer & all of the bugs have been worked out, your odds are greater of getting a more reliable one out of the box.
Of course, there are plenty of people with very reliable P-40s (either were reliable to start with or made that way with fluff & buff & tweaking) that love them.
I always like to go with what a manufacturer does best.

My wife got a .40 last month, has had no problems with it (after giving up on the 180 and staying around 150gr). About 300 rounds...recoil is a little snappy, but no problem for her.

Then again, she is pretty massive at 5'6" 140lbs...those huge arms, you know :)
