The story on the Hi-Points is this:
-The carbines are fun, accurate little shooters. Not perfect (my friend has one), but fun to shoot. (I'd rather have a Kel Tec Sub-2000, but it costs more.)
-The pistols, however, are another story. They're one of the very few full size blowback pistols chambered for service cartridges. Most blowback pistols are in .380 or less.
The more powerful cartridge using a blowback operation (as I understand it) necessitates the huge, blocky slide.
At any rate, don't think that most TFLers look down on inexpensive firearms. The owners of many a Ruger, CZ, Kel-Tec or Makarov will agree with me.
However, the Hi-Points have a notoriously bad reputation, which accounts for their lack of popularity here. Now it's possible that their QC is improving; there's no reason a full size blowback pistol (odd as it may be) has to be a piece of junk, but that's what the Hi-Points are known for.
