KBI/FEG Hi Power knock off.

While at the store today, I found a Hungarian FEG Hi-Power for $250. I'm really excited as I've always wanted somthing of JM Browing, but couldn't afford the crazy prices of the 1911s. Does anyone have any experience with these guns? When I looked at it side by side with an FN model, The FN looked much nicer in finish, and polishing, but I'm capable enough with a dremmel to do some polish work. Other than that, they looked identical, and the guy at the counter who is usually pretty knowlegeable about these things said that the parts interchange well. It is only in 9mm, but that's OK. I'm not looking for personal defence, but rather like the idea of owning one. Kinda like art to me. Should I get it, or wait and get a better known brand of HI Power?
 
I think I answered this for you on another board but I can be redundant. The Feg High-Power clone is a good solid pistol. It will get you through the night. Is it not a FN or Browning. Their quality and resale is much higher but if you want a shooter you can't go wrong. Make sure you buy the FEG with descent sights. Regards, Richard.
 
I recently acquired an FEG FP9 after doing a little research on the forums (these Hi-Power clones seem to get good reviews). I've only put about 100 rounds through mine, but my first impressions are that it is accurate and reliable (no jams or FTF). The pin holding the trigger in place did start to drift out, but that's my only complaint. Price seems about right - I was able to get mine for $40 less.
 
I have a friend who owns one and he loves his. He paid a smith and got a trigger job (I think they removed the magazine safety) and put on some houge rubber grips. Other than that it is compleatly stock. And it shoots great, no malfunctions, good accuracy, excellent price.

If I remember right I think Dr. Rob owns one also, and uses it for IDPA, though I might be thinking of somebody else on this board.
 
I bought an FEG P9 Model 94 about a month ago. I paid $284 but got three mags. I didn't do well on the price, but I walked into a local gun shop and, well you know the rest.

They are imported by Century Arms. The one I have is double action, has a safety-decocker (no cocked and locked carry), and a square trigger guard.

The sights aren't very good, and the trigger pin drifts (loc-tite) like Engineer said, but those are my only complaints. White paint on the sights helps a lot. I thought the shiny blued finish was well done.

Mine has had no jams after about 250 rounds of FMJ and LRN. Accuracy is good, trigger is a very hard pull, especially in double action. The gun is very heavy and has lots of squared off corners.

If you don't mind spending about $100 more, you can get a CZ-75, which is a much better gun. I _might_ get some trigger work done on mine after about 1000 more rounds, but its not a priority.

Nothing wrong with mine at all. IMO, the slide release and thumb safety levers are a lot better than those found on th MKIII's. I got mine for $219+tax, IIRC.
 
The only inherent problem the I have found with the clones is the loose slides. Since the trigger mechanism runs through the slide, the accuracy has got its limits. But in most cases that accuracy is beyond the shooter. For about $100 you can get a Cylinder&Slide hammer and shear, a key mechanism to better the trigger. With those two items the gun will embarrass your friends with HP's. You are lucky if have found a FP9, untapered slide, they are a bit heavier than the Browning & FN's, making recoil a bit more manageable with hot loads.

A friend of mine had one a couple of years ago. The trigger was horrible, but the pistol was reliable and its accuracy was noteworthy. I thought my friend was well armed with it.
 
I had just recently put a Ruger P-95 on layaway. But after hearing so many people on this forum, and in person, sing the praises of the FEG clone, I called up my dealer and told him to put my deposit on one.

I understand that the gun is not as well finished as the real deal, but I'm not looking for pretty. All I want is something affordable that works.

Ledbetter offers some good advice. For about $125.00 more you can move up to the CZ. The CZ has a superior grip tang, thumb-safety, sights and built to much higher standards. The Witness would be another alternative. Having said that, the comments I've read over the last year have been favorable toward the Feg. JohnH

Don't know if they still do it, but FEG made HiPower clones that were marked with FEG in miniscule letters on the dustcover (?) about an inch in front of the trigger guard on the frame, the the slides emblazoned with a large Mauser banner and sold by Mauser at one time. Maybe a year ago?

I paid $199 (+ tax of course) for my FEG PJK HP9 last year. The trigger is heavy and the grip is short for my large hands, my little finger hits the toe of the mag affecting the mag safety. If I'm careful how I hold it the Feg is capable of being accurate for me. My particular PJK does not like Russian Wolf 115gr FMJ steel case ammo. Two rounds failed to extract, the second case needed a cleaning rod to tap it out. My CZ 75B and G17 did not have any problems with this ammo. I think the FEG is OK but would highly recommend a CZ 75 over it any day.
 
I've always thought the CZ-75's LOOKED like a Hi-Power, but are the parts 100% interchangeable with a FN or Inglais (?) Hi-Power? // Richardson
