KAR did some things right

A few months ago I bought a Thompson commando from KAR arms who now owns Thompson, I took it out and shot it a few weeks later only to have it start jamming every other round. I also noticed the Parkerizing was coming of as well on the Cutts compensator, So I told them they will pay for the shipping both ways and fix the problems I had with it. They agreed and finally three and a half weeks later it came back with a new bolt and a Compensator with the parkerizing on it. They didn't complain about what I said they just fixed it,

The down side was the people I talked to knew very little about the gun itself so if you had a technical question they were not the ones to ask. I tried several times asking them if the original barrels would fit on these new ones. I never got a answer from them. All they said was I am not a gunsmith and they didn't know who to talk to. I understand that they are not gunsmiths that answer the phone, and I didn't expect therm to be, but at I felt the least they could do was try and make some attempts to find answers and direct me to someone that could answer that question. The Customer service was below average the work on the gun is great but they need to have someone that actually knows a little bit of history about the gun. I love my Thompson just not sure I would deal with them again for lack of information that they disclosed. I asked for a tracking number and they couldn't even give me that so I could have my dad be here when it arrived and sign for it. In the long run she did come back but I would be very hesitant in buying another from them.

I have done the technical support thing (computers not guns) and your question about older barrels on your Thompson falls under the category of "outside the scope of our support."

There are good and valid reasons why such questions are not answered. It has to do mainly with liability. The barrel may or may not work without fitting--but are you qualified to fit it (they don't have that answer). The barrel may or may not have been bubba'd at some point before you got it (again without inspecting they have no way to know). There may have been deliberate changes to the receiver so that older barrels can not work. The older barrel may be short enough that it converts the Thompson from a legal, as manufactured, carbine into a Short Barreled Rifle under Federal or State purview (again how would they know).

I appreciate the info darkroommike I understood the liability thing and I told them that but they failed to even direct me in a direction that I could research the answer myself. To me they didn't seem to excited to answer my questions and they could have cared less if they did. I expected at least a reference to someone that would know but that never happened. They just seemed lack of wanting to help. At least when I bought my henry Golden Boy they were more than exstatic to do so. If anything its not a lack of quality of the product but a lack of customer relations on their end. Like I said I loved the rifle I am just dissapointed in their lack of effort. Maybe I am expecting to much. IDK

Just a suggestion....maybe Kahr would be more responsive if you spelled their name correctly. Don't feel bad, that silent "h" gets a lot of people. :D

On a more serious note, their customer support seems to be top notch for their pistol customers. Perhaps the purchase of Thompson left them with a gap in their knowledge base, so to speak.
