Kar 98k without disassembly disk - now with pics

I picked up a 1939 K98k at a gun show, but I'm confused about one feature - a stock without the bolt disassemble tool in in the stock. The stock also has a swivel underneath in addition to the typical sling slot. Any ideas?

The stock is not an original K.98k stock. It might have been an older stock converted but none of those would have the sling swivel in place.

The disc was dropped on the Kriegsmodell stocks and a cross hole in the cup type buttplate substituted.

You don't say who the manufacturer was. It is possible that Mauser had some stocks left over from a foreign contract (Portugal?) and was allowed to use them up in K.98k production. That would be unusual at an early stage, but things like that did happen. Pics of the rifle markings, serial number and the stock serial number would help in figuring out what you have.

It's 243 marked, with WAA 28, correct for Mauser Oberndorf at the time. The stock has the cup-shaped butt plate without the tool hole. All the action parts are numbered right, down to the follower. Only thing off are the front and middle ring. The middle ring and the spring are very crude, all in all it looks like a late war restocking with "what's available".

A late war replacement stock is very possible. By late 1944 the bottom of the barrel was being scraped and old parts were being updated as necessary and used both as factory parts and as replacement parts.

FWIW, I think 243 was Mauser Borsigwalde, with WaA 26. Mauser Oberndorf was 42 and the WaA inspector was 63, later replaced by 655, then 135.

finally got around to do some pictures

The inlay for the swivel is clearly old (the owner said he had the numbered swivel, I'm not holding my breath)

WAA stamp, still can't tell if 26 or 28
