Kalifornia price question

Kalifornia price question (Model 28 & Service Six)

I have two opportunities in front of me and would like opinons.

1st, I need to preface that I am in Kalifornia and neither of these two revolvers are on the "approved list" and thus are only available as either PPT's or consignment through a shop. Prices, obviously are a little higher because of that.

I have the opportunity to pick one of the following two:

A) a very clean Ruger Service Six 4" in blue for $325. It's a PPT so no tax. Only DROS and transfer fees. As the owner is about 2.5 hours away, I will need to drive down once, do the paper work, and drive down 11 days later to pick it up. I have seen a pic of this gun, but have not handled it.

B) a very clean S&W M28 Highway Patrolman 4" for $399. This gun is also very very clean with a small shallow scratch on the side plate about 1/4". No barrel wear and only a little marking on the cylinder. This is in a shop about 2 miles away. The gun is tight and solid. I'll need to pay tax and DROS, but no transfer fee.

I could use some advice and opinons on this. One of these will most likely turn into a house gun for my wife.

Thanks,

Jeff

I live in Kali myself so I understand your pain .Both are good guns but I would buy the Model 28 it sounds in great shape and its an N-frame.Plus its only a couple of dollars more. Myself I would buy both the Smith 1st then put the Ruger on layaway.:D

My two bits worth....the Highway Patrolman is the best......have had them for about 40 years and they ar heavy but extremely tough!

I'd choose the Smith & Wesson model 28. My recent choice was to leave the People's Republic of California to return to the United States.

I have shot both. The Ruger is good but the Smith&Wesson is better. Buy it PROVIDING it is not too large for your wife's hands. Every N frame S&W I have ever seen was accurate and reliable!

going to look at the S&W again

Going back to today to do a real check out of the S&W.

After putting all the numbers on paper and comparing, the real cost difference is only about $30. The transfer fee, gas, and the 8 hours in the car (there and back twice) really bite into any tax and asking price savings.

I guess the real question is, is $399 a reasonable price for a very nice M28? I know it's not a steal, but bargins on "non-approved" handguns have all but dried up here. I don't want a new S&W or a new Ruger. I'm trying to get the last few handguns on my list taken care of before the new PRK laws go into effect 01/03.

All I "want" to pick up before then are a nice .357 revolver, a blue Hi-Power, and a 2" Model 36. Either the Service Six or this M28 would certainly fit the .357 need quite nicely. I am leaning towards the M28.
