here is the story from yahoo news.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A state Senate committee approved a proposal Tuesday to put a serial number on every handgun bullet made or sold in California.

The measure cleared the Senate Public Safety Committee on a 4-2 vote over opposition from manufacturers, firearms dealers and sport shooters.

The technology exists to laser-cut bullets with a number that police could use to trace who purchased bullets used in crimes, said Democratic sponsor Sen. Joseph Dunn.

Purchasers would pay up to a half a cent per bullet to fund record-keeping by the state Department of Justice. Vendors would pay up to $50 a year.

"We'll solve a lot of crimes if this becomes law," said Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

If approved by the Legislature, the law would take effect in July 2007.

I have a funny feeling that this is going to cost more money, be useless and confusing and then be proven a waste of time, money and resources. There will be 0% increase in crimesolving. In fact, crimesolving efforts will be hampered. Technicians will be tied up with attempts to track branded bullets in a defective database.

No they won't. The criminals will used unmarked ammo and continue to blast away merrily with their semiautos because they know there isn't a damn thing most Californians can do about it.

California senator: "Criminals using unmarked ammo? How could that be?"

Me: "Why do you think they are called criminals? They commit crimes. Like not using ammo registered in your stupid database."

What will happen is ammo sales in bordering states will go up. People that were not criminals before will suddenly become criminals and the wrong people will be put in jails.

If I lived in Kalifornia I would make sure that my carry ammo was legal...
