Kahrs - K40 covert vs MK40

I'm saving my pennies for an MK40 but I keep seeing K40 coverts on gunbroker and other places for real good prices (there's a K40 covert on GB for $400 right now).

It looks to me like the K40 covert is just a regular K40 with the grip cut down to the same size as the MK40.

I'm thinking that the reason that the MK40 is so concealable is the shorter grip (the grip is the part of my Steyr M40 that prints, but not the slide).

If the shorter slide of the MK doesn't increase concealability all that much then maybe there is an advantage to the full length slide of the K40 covert (longer barrel and longer sight radius should make for a more accurate gun).

Anyone of you guys out there fired both?

I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and get the less expensive K40 covert. (although I gotta admit the MK is just better looking then the K covert :p )

I have the K40 Covert. You get the added weight on the muzzle to help control the .40 recoil. The shorter grip is much easier to conceal, if fact, I can still fit it into the pocket of my jeans.

Depending on jeans the longer barrel may not fit in your jeans. It doesn't in mine. Also you may want to do a search on the polymer Kahr and check the history on that plastic frame gun. MK is a great gun though.

I have the MK40 and it kicks pretty hard but it is manageable and very accurate. I would think with the extra barrel length and weight, that recoil would have to be reduced somewhat with the covert. You are correct, the covert is the K40 with cut down grips. I like the MK due to the short length. I think the covert is about an inch longer.

See if any shops in your area sell them and see if the covert will fit in your pocket. If so, get it. The MK's are expensive. I got mine in California for $399 in late 2000. I couldn't pass it up at that price. They were closing them out in anticipation of the new B/S laws that went into effect on 1/1/01. The Kahr's were not yet on the "approved list". They are now but for a while there, no one knew if they would be and the shop didn't want to get stuck with it.

I don't want one of the polymer Kahrs. I'm sure they are fine guns, but I've already got a polymer gun.

The steel Kahrs are lighter then my polymer Steyr. I think I may want a little weight to it ... if I'm going to be throwing .40 jhps I want that extra weight to help soak up the recoil.

I guess I really want the MK, but those K Coverts are so much better priced and have that extra 3/4" of barrel and sight radious so they deserve a second look.

Ok, so here's a good question. If I had the choice between a K40 Covert Elite 98 and a regular old MK40, would the Elite triggr tip the scale toward the K40 Covert?

wish I could just rent one of each and burn up a box of ammo in each and make up my mind that way. But nobody around here carries anything but the full size Kahrs (non CCW state so the gun shops figure there's no market) They'll special order just about anything, but they won't stock them. :(
