Kahr P9 vs: Glock 19??? Re: Accuracy, Reliability, etc.

I am a Makarov lover above and beyond all other pistols... However...

I am STRONGLY CONSIDERING the purchase of a Kahr P9 or a Glock 19 just for fun. And of course I will likely end up carrying it at some point when I consider that I need to carry something more powerful.

My priorities are 1. Accuracy, 2. Dependability, 3. Longevity, 4. Ease of carry. The magazine capacity is really not an issue for me in this choice.

I have no experience with the P9 and have not owned or shot a G19 in the many years since I've begun owning and shooting Makarovs. When I did own the G19 I found it superior to all other 9s of the day -- at that time. That was before I first shot and owned the Makarov.

As I consider all other pistols should be evaluated according to the Makarov as the benchmark -- I wonder how in YOUR opinion these other two BIG nines will compare to my remarkable 9x18 East German Makarovs.

I have an East German Mak, but I don't think I'd rate it above all other handguns. :-) Yes, they're well made, and for the price, an excellent value.

As far as the choice between the Kahr P9 and the Glock 19, I'd rather shoot the Glock, but I'd rather carry the Kahr. :)

I had a chance to handle a P9 for the first time today. And I have to say that I won't ever have to handle one again. I don't want a flame war w/ Kahr owners, actually the steel versions are quite nice. But, the P9 has nothing over the 19. I carry a 19 every day off-duty and occasionally as a back-up to my 17. Yeah the P9 has a slimmer grip, but I found it almost too slim for comfort. It felt akward in the hand. I have never had a prob concealing the 19. I find that the size difference of the P9 does not in any way have an advantage over the 19. The P9 even felt like it pointed differently than other steel Kahrs that I have handled. I will take the 19 w/ 15rds vs. the 7 of the P9. One other thing that I found disconcerting was the price. $550 for a new P9 w/ nite sites. I thought the whole purpose of Kahr going polymer was to produce a better price point. The best deal around is still the E9 and it can be had w/ a new duo-tone finish for about $335.

One, you won't get an argument with me re: th E9. That, really, is the gun that would be more comparable to the Mak, being of all steel consruction. The whole reason behind the P9 was not price, but MARKETING. Let's face it, everyone is going polymer, with one model or another. With its lighter weight, superior trigger, and more potent caliber, the P9 would, IMO be a superior CCW pistol.

The Glock 19 is the equivalent of a Crescent wrench--works as advertised and will probably never need anything more than the most routine attention. My daughter has one which suits her fine; only thing I did was toss the plastic sights and put on a set of Novak Low Mounts. If another gun suited her better I would have bought it instead. 99% of us need nothing else anyway.

Okay Victor, I was with you, right up until the "and more potent caliber" part. Can you elaborate on that one for me?

Thanks!
