Kahr MK9 customized by Steve Clark Custom

I had my MK9 customized by Steve Clark Custom shop a month ago. Now my lazy butt finally got around to taking the picture.

There weren't too many sharp edges from the factory but the few that were evident got removed. I also had a trigger job done and 30 lpi front strap checkering.

Son,

Is the Kahr a DAO-only? If I'm correct, isn't DAO - when you get a double-action pull *every* time you pull the trigger?

Have you read the latest Handguns mag? They have an article on the new polymer version of the Kahr. It looks very nice...

Yes, Nick, it is DAO. Your definition is correct, the pull is the same every time. However, it is not nearly as long or heavy as the typical DA revolver. About 1/2 the length of pull and felt pull weight. Consequently, it is MUCH easier to fire, even rapidly, then you might think.

Son, it looks as though they did a fine job. If you've fired the full-size K9, do you find the MK series less easily controlled?

Recoil doesn't bother me with the MK9. I shoot a lot of .45's, .357 mag, .44 mag and other big calibers. So when I shoot the MK9, the 9mm recoil is cake.

The only drawback with the MK9 is the grip size. You can't get a really good firm grip with it. However, there's give and take. It's easier to conceal but harder to grip. For the purpose of this little gun, I'll deal with the grips :)

The polymer P9 is nice but not much lighter then the K9.

Congrat's ... your MK looks great.

nickcarr, welcome to TFL! You'll enjoy these folks.

One thing I've really begun to notice about the Kahr ... at least for me, I think I much prefer the Elite trigger. The P9 apparently comes with that trigger, and I've decided to send my K9 into the factory for the conversion. It is a much shorter pull, IMHO, and I'm looking forward to the change.

ArmySon, do you use a Pearce mag extension, or did you just get used to having your pinky 'dangle'? That's the part I haven't gotten used to yet on the MK's. Just feels uncomfortable to me. Your thoughts?

Regards from AZ

I just let the pinky dangle. The way I look at it Jeff, I carry the MK9 with the flush magazine. If I were to practice with the extension, it wouldn't be natural if (god forbid) I ever had to use the gun. So I practice with the dangly pinky.

After about 1200 rounds, I got used to it.

Son, The Kahr looks great! I just got my MK9 back from the smith also. Instead of the checkering I had him stipel (sp) the same area you had done. It really puts a good grip on it compared to the original. I also have some wood grips on mine, which, although I had to do some fitting, make the gun feel alot better than the plastic without adding much width. Glad more people are turning to Kahr........Opie

Jeff, thanks for the welcome. I wish I would have found this place a few weeks ago! ;)

Son - I actually went out to shoot the Kahr tonight. I didn't shoot the mk9, as it was just too small for my hands. I could *make* it fit, but it wasn't comfortable. I'm a big .40 cal fan, so I shot the stainless Kahr 40.

It wasn't too bad, although, I wasn't happy with my groups. At only 10 yds or so, I was getting about 4" groups. I wasn't sure if it was me or what, but it seemed that shots were just flying off. The kick was surprising. At first, I thought my G22 was harsher, but not even close. My G22 was nothing compared to the kick of the Kahr. I liked everything else regarding the pistol. It seem to fit perfectly in my hand. Anyway, if you or anyone else has any tips on shooting it, then I'd be happy to give it another chance. I would be curious to shoot the 9mm as well, but I'd like to stay .40 if possible.

Nick:

People with larger hands seem to find that the Kahr K40 kicks a lot. I get an impact in the web of my hand, between thumb and index finger. I've found that holding the gun with a crush grip and adding a Harrts recoil reducer have improved it. I can now do 70-100 rounds through it at a go. But that's about all I want to do in a day.

The K9, in contrast, has very little recoil, IMHO. The MK9 is in between the K9 and K40, but really not bad at all. I put 50 rounds of 115gr +P+ through my MK9 last Saturday. It's a remarkably accurate little gun.

No, I don't let my pinky dangle. Instead, I wrap it around the bottom of the mag.
