Kahr K9 polymer - reliable? accurate?

I had the opportunity to check one of these out today. I was amazed at its thin profile and liked the deep checkering on the front and backstraps. I know that some of these are in use now and would like some feedback on this gun before I contemplate buying one.

Do a search for "P9." My reply. Have put another 100 through it since then- slick- or it was until I managed to 'mess' it up trying to intall the Kahr night sights with a Brownell's sight pusher (and it shot to POA sooo well BEFORE!)
Slide is on it's way back home now. Boy do I feel like a dope.

When and if I get a P9, I plan on getting a set of Heinie Straight Eight night sights. Would you recommend sending the gun to Heinie, or would a local gunsmith be up to the task?

CAK: If you want to save money, just send the slide to Heinie. The slide by itself isn't technically a "firearm", saving you a lot of paperwork and/or shipping costs (depending upon your shipping mode of choice). You can tweak the zero once you get it back.

$530.00...? Forget THAT! I like Kahr, but the polymer is supposed to save weight AND money.

You can forget my ever forking out ANY money for one of those. And here I thought they were a reasonable company. Guess I'll have to stick with their steel.

$530.00 for a 7-shot... almost as poor a value as an HK Squeezer :o)

Just as poor of a value, and probably just as accurate(almost :))too. But a lot smaller, a lot lighter, & a lot cheaper. So, it's value should be READILY apparent!

Louis,

You said the Kahr P-9 is smaller. I'm SURE it's the same size as the standard K-9 and probably close in size to the HK. Besides, I typically have a difficult time justifying paying MORE for less... example, when you have to pay MORE for a 2-door coupe, or compact version of the SAME handgun. For less money, you can get a Glock 19, or (2) Ruger P-95's.

When the P-9 comes down to $300.00, I'll take take a look at them.

Ben: No flame intended. You were comparing the HK P7 to the new P9, and that's where my reply was targeted :).

You can't compare the price of the P9, brand new on the market, w/a G19 that's been available for about 8(?) years now! As to compacts should be cheaper, I don't buy into that. They must be totally re-engeineered to work at different slide velocities, with different springs, smaller parts, etc. Such is not always cost effective. The polymer frame may be sub-contracted out for all we know, which may affect the price.

As to quality, IMHO, the Kahr is superior to the Glock. If you haven't hit their site, please do so www.kahr.com BTW, do the G folks even HAVE a website? I was refering to quality of "manufacture" BTW, NOT quality of the gun. Glock is very good in that regard! Please don't flame me on that one. :)

VLouis,
No flames were ever intended or received... don't worry about that. I'm sure you can understand my personal point of view though. You also mentioned that I shouldn't compare this gun to a gun that's been on the market for 8 years... WHY? Do you think the price of handguns is going to go DOWN? :)

I know that Kahr builds an awsome gun... but I'm gonna let the market play with it for a while and get the bugs worked out before I ever consider the P-9. Typically polymer is supposed to save WEIGHT and MONEY. If the P-9 really was $520.00, then it is too much. If the other price of around 400.00 was correct, then I find the P-9 to be far more reasonable. (still too much IMO)

Take care bud,
Ben

The ~$530 price I mentioned is from a shop that runs a bit high for new and popular items. Given the excitement around the release of the new P9, scalper pricing is not a surprise. Your local pricing may vary, of course.

I agree that the price of over $500 for a plastic gun is too much. It should compare more to their "economy" model since injection molding, from what I've read, is very cheap after initial set up.

BIG Qs:

1. Are cast lead reloads recommended since it has a polygonal rifling. This BTW is why I won't buy my sweetheart a Glock. Don't want to chance a kB, and don't want to have to buy a bunch of 9mm factory jacketed ammo to keep from a reasonable chance of backfire.

2. How is trigger pull, reset, and reach for small woman's hands?

3. How does it point/feel (ergonomics) in comparison to SIG and Glock?

Thanks for the feed back. I'm trying to find a 9mm under 23 oz. tot. of very high quality for the Mrs. to be.
