Kahr carry question

I've been considering getting a Kahr P9, possibly a K9 or MK9 for a sometimes carry weapon. The guy at the gunshop, not my usual shop, said that Kahrs are not too safe to carry with a round in the chamber. "The triggers are too sensitive and will sometimes discharge with side pressure". I have NEVER heard this before. I suspect he was trying to steer me to another type of pistol.

Anyone heard of a problem with carrying a Kahr with a round chambered? Does anyone feel uncomfortable carrying a Kahr with one in the pipe?

I carried a K9 for seven years and now carry a P9 with a round in the chamber and have never come close to a AD. The Kahrs have a smooth but long trigger and you shouldn't have a problem at all if you carry in a holster.

I carry a p9 in the summer and a k40 in colder weather, both with rounds in the pipe. Next time you're at the range, pull the rigger back sloooooooooooooowly and notice how far back it has to go to fire. This feature is precisely why I chose the Kahr over the Glock. When you carry "appendix", you want a long trigger pull...

I carried a P 40 in "smart carry" crotch holster with a round chambered. An AD is the only problem I didn't have with the pistol. I think its pretty safe.

Big Iron,

Trust your feelings... and go back to the shop and have the guy demonstrate the "side pressure" phenomenon with an unloaded pistol... I'm betting he can't do it. :D

I'd say the guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

At all.

I've got a K9, and I love it, but the trigger is a lot more reminiscent of that of one of my better S&W revolvers in double action than it is of my 1911 in single action.

As for side pressure, I don't know how that could be done, unless it was side pressure that was able to force the trigger all the way to the rear.

To be fired, the Kahr's trigger HAS to be pulled one way or another. The trigger mechanism cocks the striker -- the striker is not precocked as it is on some other handguns. It may be partially pretensioned, but it is not cocked.

Oh yeah, I've carried my Kahr numerous times with a round in the chamber.

No 9mm in the thigh yet.

Sounds like a small wager might be appropriate. If he can make it fire with "reasonable" side pressure, I'll buy it anyway at his list. If not, he gives me the pistol.:D

Actually, I can't think of any pistol that this has ever been an issue with. I've done a fair amount of research and it has never come up. I had a K40 and never considered a AD. Sideways, or other wise when carrying. As I mentioned, I think he was trying to steer me another direction. I pretty much had my mind made up already, I just wanted to do some Kahr comparisons, and kick some tires.

I still need to find a P9 covert to wrap my digits around. The grip on the MK is a bit short for me, but still want to physically try the P9 covert.

Thanks for the feedback!

Big Iron,

I bet the gun shop owner won't take you up on that wager because he is full of it.

I have an MK40. Long trigger pull. In my opinion, a Kahr is no less safe than a double action revolver. As in earlier posts, check out the trigger pull. I have never heard of side pressure causing an AD on a Kahr.

I have a K40 Covert that I carried loaded every day until I gave it to my wife as her personal carry gun. i TRUST THE kAHR and its long smooth trigger pull completely. The gunshop guy is just trying to switch yo9u to some other brand.

That guy is either a COMPLETE MORON, or a COMPLETE SNAKE who's trying to move slower inventory!!!

I've had 4 Kahrs... K40, MK9&40, and now a P40...

Even if that WAS true (which is absolutely is not) carry it in almost any holster and the trigger is COVERED!

BTW, I personally suggest the Shirt Tucker from www.comp-tac.com

Anyway, good luck!

Close Onslaught. A better term would be higher priced inventory.

As Paul Harvey would say, "And now, the rest of the story".

I'll make this short. After a day or so thinking about this, I went back to "the guy". The first time I didn't push looking at the Kahrs because of his obvious Kahraphobia. Today, I insisted that I had decided on a Kahr and wanted to see what he had.

Lo and behold, he had NONE! He had, "unloaded them at a loss because he couldn't move them and didn't have much faith in them". However, he had a MUCH better CCW. A Sig P232. "It's a better carry weapon, and .380 is a better caliber for carry due to it's lower penetration". And this basic Sig pistol could be had for a mere $625. ??????????????? A bit high?

Long story short, "No Kahr, no sale".

Now I don't know if "the guy" had just sold out and was trying to push something he had, or what. The only thing he would speak positively about was the Sigs. He talked down Makarov, Walthers, Taurus, and would only casually mention a Smith.

Is Sig having a big dealer incentive sale? I wouldn't have bought a gun there anyway, but now I don't think I'll even visit.

Went to one of my usual shops afterwards. They could not say enough positive about Kahr, including the accessiblity of Kahr's customer service. I approached the "side pressure discharge" issue with them. I only wished I'd had a camera.I think a P9 covert is in my future. Unless the MP-9 is not too far from reality.

Thanks for the reassurances.

My Kahr K9 has a looong trigger pull, it takes about 1/2" of travel to make it come to life. Use a good holster that covers the trigger guard completely, keep your finger off the trigger and you will be fine.

Just to add to the conversation,

I dropped, almost threw, my MK9 on the dresser this morning. It bounced twice then landed on the floor. What a gouge it left in the wood! :o After I climbed down from the ceiling I checked it out. No damage to the gun so no foul. And no A.D.

Gouged the wood? Hmm... my MK9 is made of steel :) go figure.

Throwing your gun around? Who dya think you are? Indiana Jones?

(I couldn't decide which comment to add, so I put both)
