came acroos a Shilen match grade barrel turned to military contour, but chambered to .308.

Anyone seen an original looking k98 w/ scope mount chambered in 3.08, or any other caliber than 8mm. I know there are some .30-06 chambering out there, but I'm primarily asking of experiences with rebarrelling the k98.

If so, anyone got 1.5/1 moa Accuracy out of factory loads with the mauser?
 
Lots of Israeli K98s chambered for 7.62X51mm NATO, plus Brazilian Mausers rebarreled to 30-06. Just screw in a new barrel and align the sights. You may have to modify the sights, but I doubt it.

With a match-grade Shilen barrel, I would still want to lap in the lugs to get best accuracy out of a K98.

If your Mauser checks out OK - lugs not set-back, no cracks etc - if it checks out and the necessary things that all 98s' ought to have done - and it tests hard enough - it is suitable for just about any cartridge that fits in the magazine box (3.4")
Most bbls' are "short-chambered" so you will need guages and a reamer to finish the chamber. Some of these early actions are "soft" - Douglas requres a R.C reading of 20C for "std'" calibers and 30-40RC for the heavy magnum calibers.

Douglas in Charleston WVa, can open the bolt face and do any rechambering work for you at a nominal cost - they are extremely reliable!
Mausers, despite the markings could have been made by a number of countries during their life - it depends on the action - the ones made from 1941 till 1944 are usually the best in heat treatment. Hope your conversion works out - don't be afraid of even the Iranian or Turkish Mausers either.

I remember lots of them being sold in the 80's here in Holland. Cheap, rugged, and accurate. Were they Coruña arsenal, or am I mistaking? Anyway lots of fun and in .308, that's why they were not admitted to veteran's matches.
 
·308s are Mauser made in the Oviedo factory, while 8x57 were made in Coruña. Cheers. THUD.- (Dutchie, were in Holland are You exactly?).
 
Norway had rechambered the German K98k to 30.06, Israel had rebarreled them (and a few M24s)to .308. La Corunha made the K98 in 8x57 IS and some in .308 until the 1950s. The .308s were made for an Israeli contract but never delivered and were sold in the 1980s.

To change the sights over from your old barrel, you have to heat them with a torch, they are soldered on. The old barrel might be screwed on pretty hard, so you need good tools.

You will probably have to have the gun proofed in the Netherlands, so the chamber and headspacing will be checked anyway.
