K-phos pretreatment before gunkote?

I tried this, but I notice the gun seems smoother afterwards, and not like it will have enough bite for the gun-kote.

So I wiped the gun down w/ MEK, and got some film off, but still see no roughness from the sandblast. The gun is still a darker gray than before I sprayed it, though.

I've stopped at this point and would like to try sandblating again before repeating.

Anyone know what strips this stuff off?

Is the "smoothness" normal?

I don't know what takes it off, but I used it on my CZ-70 and it worked great. It provided a somewhat smooth base, but so does paint primer.

Did you try it on a piece of scrap metal? You want a smooth finish when done, and Gunkote isn't supposed to be laid on thick.

I sandblasted with 120 grit aluminum, oxide, K-phos'ed, then applied Silver Gunkote. I have had no problems with the finish so far after 3 of 4 months. The final finish came out verry smooth and glossy - almost slick.

Thanks.

My gun was very smooth after I treated it.

I'm only worried b/c I want the gun-kote to stick properly.

I hope so.

Still, I want to repeat the process to see if I get consistent results, unless someone can confirm to me that my original results were correct.

GSR, that's why I said try it on some scrap metal.

I sandblasted a piece of pipe, Kphos'ed it and Gunkoted it to make sure I understood how to apply the stuff and to see what the finish would be like. Once I was satisfied with that, I coated my pistol.
