Normally, the sideplate is removed, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Loosen the spring tension screw at the front of the grip. Then you can put the hooked end of the spring up under the sideplate and hook the strirrup. Then bend the spring until the other end fits into the slot at the bottom of the grip and tighten the screw to the proper tension.
If you remove the sideplate, release the tension on the screw first, and don't retension the spring until the sideplate is replaced.
